Oh, God ... please let this be a Pilot and not crew.
Any civilization that puts women in harms way -- while there remains males not yet in uniform -- is not civilized.

Thanks BDFguy. I figured someone would help us out on that one. By the way, it sounds like you have some actual experience with these early boats.IT TAKES GREAT INTELLIGENCE TO FAKE SUCH STUPIDITY!Comment

We made a trip to the west coast from Pearl Harbor for sound trials and analysis of the ship. During this very interesting evolution, only 50% of the crew needed to be onboard. Another officer and I got permission from the CO to bring our bicycles on the trip. We disassembled them and put them in the torpedo room. Rode all over the Seattle area and Olympic Penninsula. It was awesome but seemed like we were always going up hill.
Another boat making a home port change from San Diego allowed a sailor to disassemble his motorcycle and store it in the free flood areas. He coated it with a ton of grease. It arrived safely, cleaned the grease and it still workedComment

The partially open door above the sonar is for the whistle. It was always fun to be the one to test it after surfacing because it spewed out water that collected in it. One time the surfacing crew blew it out but it collected water from a lot of surface spray. The deck crew got a bath when we came to the pier and we sounded the whistle when backing. It was funny as heck but they were po'd.Comment

I was speaking about the earlier picture where the under ice sonar was painted.
