    Contra-Rotating Gearbox

Anyone done any work on a contra-rotating gearbox? I'm thinking of doing a Japanese Type A midget (having just had a detailed look at one in the Australian War Memorial, Canberra). The anniversary of the sub attack on Sydney harbour is coming up and it seems like a good subject.

Wish I had shots of the differential shaft-splitter I used -- a unit put together by a friend of my pal, Phil Kordich.

Mark Greenman has contra-rotating props in his Albacore. Check out his build here http://forum.sub-driver.com/showthre...core-continued
      Or contact him.
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

Thank you all. That is a great looking gear set. Now I just have to make it about twice as small and I'm on the way. The inside diameter of the sub is slightly under one inch. Pretty squeezy!

Upper and lower hull with new rudders fitted. Working on the gearbox and thinking about WTC.

Yes I have. This guy has nailed the gearbox. I've been out today scouring the local shops for crown and pinion gears - found some really nice things in a slot car salon and some AFX bits and pieces. Having spent the day drilling .5 mm holes and such, I'm knackered. Photos tomorrow.

Gearbox options thus far. They both work, although the larger one takes up far too much room. Its the mighty midget for me!

I reckon this will be free running skimmer?

At the moment its a pile of junk on the work bench! I'm thinking of running three channels in it. Rudder, ESC and ballast but its very early yet and I only have a limited number of fingers to bash with the hammer. With any luck there will be enough space to fit in some sort of rudimentary syringe system that will allow it to ballast down to periscope depth and back up to normal surface trim.

Use the three channels this way: ch-1, rudder; ch-2, stern planes; and ch-3, throttle. Trim the boat so that just the tip of the sail sticks into the air. Drive it dynamically in depth.

That's how I've configured the very successful 13" long Revell 1/230 SKIPJACK.
