The updated rules sound excellent. I wish the cosmetics where worth more points but I think I understand why they aren't. A dynamic diver is acceptable but will get an automatic 5 points less out of a possible 30, that seems very fare.

I can't wait to see what others come up with!
I hope everyone remembers to document their builds with plenty of photos and videos.

Sorry for the delay, everyone. It's been a hectic couple of weeks between work, travel and Renee's new chemotherapy regime. I leave again tomorrow for a week to FL, but should be able to get my brain wrapped around some of these questions and issues. Here is a summary of the questions that it looks like have cropped up and I will answer as soon as I can:

2.) dynamic divers allowed? Perhaps that can be a different category with a smaller prize...?

There's always a new skill or challenge in this hobby.

I'm guessing that Bob is hoping to attract a few new faces by getting some inexpensive designs out there for people to build, or perhaps it's simply curiosity I don't know.

I don't think that counts as variable displacement, it's still a form of dynamic diver, albeit using a thruster rather than flow over the hydroplanes and hull.

In fairness there currently exists a number of models out there that can get you into this hobby very cheaply. In less developed economies even those low costs can be prohibitive, but not in countries like the USA.

I think the main problem lies is in skill set and underpinning knowledge. Even with technologies like 3d printing and pre-moulded parts, anyone engaging in this hobby needs a decent understanding of limits and fits, correct use of adhesives and reasonable dexterity with hand tools, cutting, filing, drilling etc.

All of which can be learned - I know I still have a lot to learn!

How about using vertical thruster in lieu of ballast tanks to dive?

I think this contest needs an impartial judge/mediator who can decide some of these questions and whom can be consulted with regarding acceptability of builders choices.

This Judge could also take certain factors into account when they pick a winner such as whether the builder scratch built everything or used a $1000+ 3-D Printer or CNC machine etc. I have someone in mind, but I don't know if they might want to be in the contest and I can not mention their name.....

Regarding materials, are costs going to be calculated pro rata?

Many parts have to be purchased in minimum quantities often in excess of which is required for a single build, leaving parts left over for other projects e.g. pipe, connectors, wiring, linkages, resin, seals etc.

Will all parts have to be new, or can secondhand/used/scrap material items be incorporated?

Also inclusion of a ballast system is simple enough, however seems somewhat restrictive if the original boat didn't have one, and dynamic divers can be just as much fun as static divers.


Final point, will designs have to original e.g. no use of others STL's/3d cad or pre-made hulls.

Why not? They're part of the sub, and a vital one at that...

Think disposable batteries like alkalines, $1 per piece. 5-6 pieces of AA batteries to make 7.4v.
The sub only has to travel 30ft. 15 ft forward turn then travel back 15ft.
To conserve power ballast venting needs to be passive. Ballast blowing can either be thru water pump or snort/ low pressure blower. Gas like Propel would be least power hungry. Limit to 1-2 blows
