A bit of progress on my old Holland project.....still working on the Otto Motor, that has much more in common with a steam engine than with a modern combustion engine, e.g. the revolution speed was controlled with a centrifugal governor.

The Otto motor is pretty much done. Some bolts and nuts here and there, but basically that's it....

Compared to the combustion engines, the electric motors are usually quite boring. Not the 1903 version with cast iron frames and open design. Note the upper gear axis running through the octagonal frame with the field coils....

Added the brushes of the commutator. This is guesswork. I couldn't find a reliaibale source that shows how they looked. But on the original motor one can see interfaces that might have been the anchor points of the brush supports. Went from this idea....If you have more informatioj on this topic, Id be happy to adjust the concept.

Will you also be including the organic CO detector?

Maybe, maybe.....but for now I concentrate on hardware, not wetware.

Progress on the drive train. One has to appreciate the compact design, where the frame of the electric motor also supports the gears. The gear on the Otto motor side has a friction clutch. When engaged, the upper shaft is coupled to the combustion engine and drives the prop and the electric motor as dynamo. When open, the electric motor drives the upper shaft via the rear gear. Clever! But: The coarse and spur-toothed gears without housings must have caused a hell of a noise. And no noise suppression bulkhead between engines and crew....

I expect they were too high as kites on the petrol vapours to care about the noise.

Progress on the drive train of the HMS Holland....I detailed the gear and the clutch. The clutch again is allot of guesswork. The original corroded to a large extent and the Lambert plans are not detailed enough to compensate. But I found some photos of vintage steam engine pulleys with friction clutches that look very similar to what I can see on the Holland photos. So I went with that....
