Anyone got any ideas as to what the extra padding athwart the engine spaces is?

Yes, spot on. I aint that old to have been taken round the pre war O class!! I am only a strippling of 70 years young. Interesting photos of boats in their later years. The dome on the bows is a late addition as they were all completed with a clear bow area. Strange thing about the UK, all of the classes of surface and under water craft built end up with the best of the best being the last. Vanguard, best and last battleship ever built. She could have stuffed the Bismark on her own. The Oberons being the best conventional subs ever built by any nation.

I've been poured into taxis and beds in an inebriated state many times, but being poured out of an accommodation hatch was a first for me.
I understand that the class was reputed to be the most silent non nuke boat ever designed and built. Several were exported for foreign service and their owners never had a bad word to say about them. UK can produce quality engineering when required, and with these boats they excelled themselves.
Partisan, moi? You better believe it matey's.
Im assuming that you are talking about the Oberon class. For a moment I got excited because I thought you were talking about the pre-war "O" class. What a classy bow she had.
I found these two pics of the Oberon class. Nice.

I have always been impressed with UK men-of-war and Sailor's. A tough, professional mob if ever there was one.

In reality you arent going to be using the naked eye to be looking for subs underwater, so provided it is camoflaged on the surface what does it matter about colour related to underwater.
Perhaps the green is to blend in with the surrounding terrain, since It never goes far from shore anywhere. Thats a fact. You can read about that particular voyage when Kim took command, and see that it is a museum piece and they didnt want to loose it to ROK antisub warefare by stepping out of bounds. Especially with the fat kid driving.
