    Kilo updates

I received the Kilo SD 2 months ago.
Been very busy with work but here are some updates.
    1) Finished the hull.
    2) installed the saddles and test fitted the SD.
3)Cut a notch near the end of the upper hull to clear the aft bulkhead.
There is a considerable step between the upper and lower hull. Will glue some plastic strip to help spread out the upper hull.
    4) After gluing in the rudder bearing piece I notice that the top corner the resin rudder near the end of upper rudder fence was too close to the plastic impeding it's movement, a little sanding freed the rudder.

Next on the list would be to solder the ESC to the motor, install the propel tank and assemble the internal ballast bulkheads.

I still need to purchase 2 item, a battery pack and a radio system. Any suggestions?

      Wfly 6 ch radio $89.00

      BTRA063 RC Transmitter - 6 ch 75mhz $89.00

I'd suggest Lipo batteries, but we can't ship them to the Philippines, sorry
Stop messing about - just get a Sub-driver!

Thanks. No problem with the Lipos. I can get them locally. Lots of hobby shops here, mainly catering to RC model aircraft, cars and occasional boats , but no subs.

What about the receiver? Aren't you selling them together as a set?

No. The WFly receiver is no good for our application. You need to buy the WFly transmitter and either the Sombra SL-6 or the SL-8 -- only those receivers will put up with all the electronic noise in the tight confines of the SD without getting swamped.

          David,
          Who is John Galt?

Thank Mr. Wizard. BTW, would this be applicable too?

Nope, wrong frequency. The SL-8 and SL-6 Sombras that Caswell stocks are 72/75 MHz. The Futaba you linked to is 27MHz. (Futaba may have another that works on 75 MHz.)

Not sure what frequencies are allocated to surface RC use in the Philippines. In the US, some 75 MHz and some 27MHz space is allocated by the FCC for surface RC use.

The Futaba unit already comes with it's own mini receiver-27 mhz. No need to purchase a separate one.

Frequency allocations are the same with the US. Nowadays a lot of modelers here (aircraft mainly) are now using 2.4 ghz.
That's why I'm being tempted to use an old JR Propo radio (72 mhz), unfortunately the receiver is too big to fit inside the Kilo SD.
I did see some 72 mhz China made radio (Guanli ) on sale here ( from RTR kits which shifted to 2.4ghz) with small receivers.
I called up the hobby shop last week, the sales rep said they're currently out of stock. I know 72 mhz is strictly for aircraft use but since I won't be driving my boat near know airfields I guess it would be ok.

The JR radio may take a 75 MHz crystal, which would avoid interference with aircraft on 72 MHz. The Sombra SL-8 is a synthesized tuner that works both 75MHz and 72 MHz. In my view, a synthesized receiver is great because it's so easy and cheap to reconfigure. If you search through the forums, you'll see a link I found to a test of the Sombra SL-8.The test is a long read, but very worthwhile if you want a good understanding of what the SL-8 receiver can do.

Really? I thought radios are locked to their assigned frequency so you just can't just swap out crystals.
If I decide to stick with 72 Mhz, will the JR work with the SL8?
Aren't there some incompatibility issues with the SL 8 with other transmitters like the WFLY?

What I like about the Futaba system is that it's already a complete set.
No more worries of one transmitter not working with another brand's receiver.
And wouldn't the Futaba system with the lower frequency has better water penetrating abilities than 75 Mhz?

I just want a sure fire system here, no iffy, unsure equipment that will cut into limited budget ( already having cut backs from Finance Dept aka the Mrs.) lol.

Kazzer I notice in the listing that there is an item label as TXRX1 > RC Transmitter and Sombra RX > $139.00.
Is this a combination of the SL8 and WFLY 6?

                          Christmas Gift

My wife just bought me my next project, a Trumpeter Seawolf.
Now I have a hull to put in the other sub driver I got from David.

After a looong hiatus ( 3 years I think) I resumed my Kilo build.

Been trying to make those convoluted stern plane linkages that fit the narrow stern cone of the Kilo.

To figure out the bends and help me align the position of the control rods coming from the SD with the stern plane control horns I first used 1/16" dia soft iron wire before finalizing it in stock brass.

                              Romel,
So glad to see you working on your Kilo. Looking over the posts, you are real close to getting it done. Keep it up and keep posting!

If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.
