    Disney nautilus 31"

I believe that I have a deal with Bob Martin of Nautilus Drydocks for a hull. After I receive it and am happy with it, Ill order a Sub-Driver from him as well. Ive got a few ideas im working on. If Im successful then this Nautilus will be................exceptionally different from what we usually see. Well, thats down the road aways. Lets get the model first and take a good look at it.

You're gonna love that kit. Scott Brodeen is a frig'n genius and his kit reflects that. I'm almost done with my second (the first was a TI rip-off of the Brodeen kit) NAUTILUS and each time I handle it I'm amazed at the wealth of detail each part has.

Here are some shots to wet your appetite, Mark:

Yes, I agree. Its got all kinds of rivets and bumps and curves and....................did I mention rivets. Everything a good Sub-mariner would like. Judging from the amount of space the Sombra is taking up, I would say that its a 2" cylinder. I watched again the 20,000 leagues movie looking specifically at the subs color. When professor Aranax and his apprentice first board her the sky is overcast and darkened. Under these conditions the boat appears a dark dark grey. But later , out in the sun it appears more grey with a light orangish tint. Perhaps a dark Grey paint with a very thin wash of orangish/tan kinda thing goin on..............perhaps. In the pictures that you included in your reply, it appears a light green with somewhat rusty film on flat upper surfaces. At least thats what it looks like from here.

Way too much green. I agree with you, a more subdued grayish green with the rust accumulating around high relief items and deep into cravases and corners. This is the rust medium I used, Mark. Great stuff for this kind of work:

OK, so you must..what...dilute it and apply with a stiff brush? If you spray it, then it would be everywhere. I guess you could say that this would be my first ever foray into weathering.

ID:	98744 This stuff is slicker than snot: It's minute iron filing suspended in a water-soluble acrylic binder. You brush the crap on, let dry, then 'paint' over it (or spray) an acid (I use good old Ferric chloride, the stuff used to cut PE) and let it sit. After a few hours wipe down the model to let the acid settle into the crevasses and around the rivet heads the wiping missed. In time the iron oxidizes. Bingo! Rust! You can let it continue or hit the model with fresh water, dry and clear coat to stop the oxidation. Nothing looks like rust than rust!

                    Mark,

Your payment came through just fine and I've got pickup scheduled for tomorrow AM. I'm currently in Iowa on business but your boat will get boxed and out the door in the morning after I get back.

In regard to painting, this is how I do it:

This is an overview of the techniques that I use to finish my construction of the Nautilus Drydocks (www.nautilusdrydocks.com) Disney Nautilus model kit.

I just watched Bob's how-too on painting and weathering. What a wealth of techniques and materials. A must-see!

Of course, as soon as I get it, there will be many pictures posted of it, with attention paid to the fine detail. They only offer two sizes, this 31" and a 66". To me the 31" is too small and the 66" is too big. What is one to do except pick one and go for it. My focus in building this model is to approach this from a different angle. Most get theirs running and have a good result. However, in the opening scene of the movie the Nautilus is approaching at high speed a ship in order to damage and sink it. At the speed that it is running the water curls over the top of the bridge and swells with the shape of the Nautilus just beneath it. Its a one of a kind of wake, but can only be produced by the boat at high speed at just the right depth. High speed and fine depth control will be my goal. Lets see how I make out.

OK, well I finally am going to get some pictures up. Extremely good detail! You sharp eyed Devils will quickly see that I dont have all the hull parts on it and I havent cleaned up all the flash yet.
