Just a heads-up for those in the UK. Halfords sell their acrylic range of paints in small mixed tubs, so you can get them in relatively small quantities ideal for modelmaking. Much cheaper than buying aerosols. Can't help with US supplies I'm afraid.

I like the colour scheme which has the high antifoul line- show up well underwater.

I like the colour scheme which has the high antifoul line too, Andy - shows up well underwater.

The more colorful and/or break-up of colors, the easier to see underwater.

            Nice David
I'm interested in the technique you employ for harvesting rattle spray can's paint? Most of the sprays I have used here seem to be so quick drying that they don't lend themselves to filling up separate vials of paint without some degree of "lumpy paint". I have tried thinners but still find problems. I notice your Krylon brand paints too "dry in 10 minutes".
So is there a knack to this?
            Thanks

              John,

I find that once decanted, the Krylon paint will keep for a substantial amount of time in the glass jars I use to store the decanted paint.

              here's how:

A picture may be worth a thousand words - but not this time.

So you take a nail and puncture the top of the spray can and then you do...what? How does the paint not come shooting out of the nail hole? - or maybe that's the whole idea?

                Or...

If you do it very carefully and make the smallest of holes, the propellant bleeds off but the paint stays in the bottom of the can and then you take off the top of the can and pour the paint off. Is that it?

                Please, more words.

Only reason I've gone the Krylon route, Joel, is that I'm doing a tutorial and have to present techniques and consumables that are within the reach of the average-Joe. I use the professional coating systems, but it's too much to expect a hobbyist to do the same. Hece the discussion on box-store rattle-can paints.

OK, Roedj, what you do (and do this outside, away from the house and cars ... guess why!?), is sharpen the tip of the nail, and tap it with very, very slight blows of the hammer -- the idea is to punch a very small hole atop the spray-paint can. When you pull out the nail, listen for a slight hiss. Invert the glass container you are decanting the paint into, and place it atop the spray-paint can and quickly invert the container and spray-can, as a unit. The paint squirts into the container. leave things alone till the paint is transferred and the spray-can stops hissing. Put the cap on the glass container, but unseat the lid so the propellant still in solution has a chance to bubble out of the paint and to atmosphere through the unseated container lid.

I appreciate your explanation on how to decant rattle cans but I don't think I'll be trying it any time soon - I'll leave that to the experienced hand.

But, in the same vein as to why you are demonstrating rattle can paints, do you have a less professional example of a finishing dull coat? I ask this because, in the past, I've read about you not liking Testor's DullCote and its like.

Thanks David - this where I believe I have stuffed up previously. I sealed the container with sufficient propellant left in the mix. - The result has to be a contributor to the slaggy lumpy paint I find when I open the jar a week or so later. Either that or its ****ty paint. Thanks

I was able to get the Revell version of the 1/72 Skipjack yesterday here in Hong Kong. The kit comes in a box which is the same size they use for the 1/72 Gato and type VII. The Moebius box is half the length so the box is half empty which is just a waste which means higher shipping, printing and box costs. I would have thought Revell had a bit more sense!

I took these series of pictures the other day to show the relative size of the 1/72 Skipjack and the 1/60th Albacore. You might not be able to tell but the length of the hull only of the Skipjack is the same length as the complete overall length of the Albacore including both propellers. Also the Skipjacks sail is much bigger.
