Revell Skipjack mast's attachment

I'm currently building a 1/72 Revell Skipjack fitted with an R&R engineering WTC. This is my first RC sub build, quite enjoyable to work on it over the last few months and looking forward to getting it in the water.

Ideally I would like to mount the masts on the sail from the kit. However, I was wondering whether these should be attached with some sort of reinforcement (eg. with an internal rod) or can be glued directly as per the stock kit? I would just like to avoid them all breaking off on the first dive as I open the throttle ;-)

If I'm not mistaken the photo is of the sail is of a Thresher class submarine which is relatively small. Is is this a functional mast arrangement? (ie. can be raised or retracted)

No. Not that one. But the arrangement is a precursor to a practical retractable mast array. Just one way to skin the cat. There are others.
