I wonder if pultruded carbon fibre tubing would provide a maintenance free solution- carbon is fairly slippery. Plus lighter than brass- win, win?

One important property of the brass tube is its weight (I'm talking the tube in the float), the float has to be heavy enough to break the vacuum between snorkel induction head and the sealing rubber element atop the float when the sail broaches the surface after starting the blow completely submerged.

Part of the production process here it to lap the snorkel induction tube and float liner tube to insure a sloppy non-interference fit.

Well, I am one happy chappy. Scorpion had her HATS & SATS last weekend. All went beautifully. I still have a big smile on my noggin. . Got to chase down Peter the Great for a little bit. She went out further than I could see in the choppy conditions.
I took Scorpion out three times, the first two no ingress of water. The last time about a thumb nail worth, not sure how it got in. I am changing the induction tubes to see if it is coming in from there.
I have dialled her throttle down to 40% to make it more realistic. She doesn't roll much, ballast weights and buoyancy is correct. I used car tire balance weights to fine tune the ballast, took a while but well worth it.

Thanks to all the help from this forum, it has made me a happy man and some of the crew I sail with are now looking at a sub for their fleet as well.

Soon I'll have my own floatilla.

Thanks again, next up a type VII. It will be running a Merrimans SD, they are well worth the dollars.

        Regards

        Pawly.

The original video is not great, going out this weekend to get a decent video. I was too keen on just sailing about last weekend.

I took Scorpion out today to test my minor issues found in the last sail day. Seems they are not completely rectified as yet. She performed well enough, had minor STBD rudder issue, not enough throw and her ballast was out, heavy bow.

Called it a day when she suddenly dived and didn't surface after blowing tanks. Into the lake I strode, Andrew guiding me from the shore to the last position she was seen. Started feeling the weed and thought she would not be found. Not sure of the depth she was in, I was up to my chest. Wifey not happy either.

Seeing as I couldn't see her in the clear water, I asked Andrew to send her full astern. It took about a minute but she surfaced prop in the air, weed strangling her, lp pump still running. Put her in her cradle and inspected her container to find two drops of water. I suspect this came in when she was at an acute angle and it came in through the snort system.

Nothing damaged, minor rectification to the rudder connection, all is right with the world.

                A couple of pics........

First, thank you so much for posting the pictures. And ... WHEW!... I well know the heart-dropping feeling you get when the boat is lost to the bottom. Very glad you got it back OK. Two drops of water? We can live with that!

                  Get back on that horse!
