Unusual stern. Who can solve the mystery?IT TAKES GREAT INTELLIGENCE TO FAKE SUCH STUPIDITY!Tags: None -
To be honest with you , I dont know. I was hoping that one of you kind gents could fill me in. I found this picture with no accompanying info.IT TAKES GREAT INTELLIGENCE TO FAKE SUCH STUPIDITY!Comment

My observations.
1. The inverted U shaped lifebuoy leaning against the sail is similar to those I've seen on S Class British boats.
2. Above the sail in the background is a flag that could be a White Ensign.
3. Right upper corner, a row of houses and chimneys that look very Victorian-British and North Country.
4. Sail of background submarine looks like a P Class - to me.Stop messing about - just get a Sub-driver!Comment

Well happy to be corrected on this, but the sail and the stern are the reasoning in my answer.
The shorter tubes in the Modified O boats were removed - as to which nation's O's these are, they don't look like Australian ones, I'd be guessing by I'd say RCN?

I'm probably off on this but the Oberon seems to be in the background. The boat closest to the camera looks like something different to me.
I wish the shot has included the bow.
The two symmetrical bulges midway up on the trailing edge of the sail have me stumped, but they're probably relevant to sorting this out.
My initial guess was Scotsman, which had a tall sail, narrow profile above the waterline, and significant streamlining.Last edited by Outrider; 04-29-2011, 05:58 AM.Comment

This is the Scottsman. The modified superstructure at the sail looks different than the first picture that I posted, but Im sure that its one of her sisters.IT TAKES GREAT INTELLIGENCE TO FAKE SUCH STUPIDITY!Comment

Quote I am pretty certain it is not the SCOTSMAN ( converted and commissioned in 1948) that had no saddle tanks as such. Quite a small submarine. http://www.rnsubs.co.uk/Dits/Articles/scotsman.php fig 1 a and 1 b
And I am even more convinced its a streamlined A class . Simply the unusual shape of the saddle tanks. Almost square topped.
The fin finishes in the correct pointed tail for an A class, not rounded.

Quote I am new to this forum. I was a good friend of Peter Clisby a submariner that died last year. He left me his huge collection of many thousands of photographs & books on submarines. Amongst his photos I found this very picture. On the back it says HMS Andrew at Plymouth 1973, in the background HMS Cachalot.
Hope this solves the mystery
