I wasn't a submariner greenman, I was REME, but, I have been aboard several different boats, an unconverted S class HMS Spiteful on her return from the French was the first one. A school friend served on boats for 25 years and took me aboard his last conventional boat HMS Odin, when she was in floating drydock in Portsmouth, where I was able to go everywhere in her and even walk underneath her. I have also been aboard HMS Alliance at the RN Submarine Museum several times and also HMS Ocelot at Chatham, where she was built, and you can walk underneath her as well, and HMS Onyx at Birkenhead, which sadly I believe she is slowly sinking due to lack of care. The A class are quite unique in war and post war built boats in that their ballast tank tops are flat when compared to other round top boats. The O and P classes are difficult to distinguish as the main differences are in the materials used to construct their casings and fins. The O class used glass fibre and plastic for example, though HMS Orpheus had a fin constructed of alluminium.

Yes, its either a Oberon or a Porpoise class. Both were Identical externally. Thats kinda sad aint it. Here they had the golden oppurtunity to give us some variations to keep things interesting. BUT NO..............they had to do the cookie cutter thing.

Looks to be a Canadian Oberon. See this photo: http://www.marinerecycling.ca/mrc-ne...tful-End-1058/ or this one, which shows the ex-HMCS Olympus (on its way to Hades?): http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...7-28-11-jm.jpg

Why Richard B. Russell? And, separately, isn't that an odd name for a fish?

Because of the compartment behind the sail. They called it the "Russel Bussel". Here is a link to a post I did on it a while back.http://forum.sub-driver.com/showthre...ard+B.+Russell

Thanks... I missed your original. I saw an article here: http://www.ssn687.net/bustle1.html that gave some personalized background on the fairing and its history.

It's hard to find anything on current US subs that's much of a mystery. Any deviations from series production tend to draw attention.
