Harpooner's station, Those guys had to forrage for their food up in the Arctic circle back then. Polar Bear, Walrus,Seal, small whale ect. Notice the similarity of the hulls with the type xxiii and the early guppys. Just the sails got more streamlined over the years.

Thats certainly possible, but it looks like there is more to it than that.

just pullin yer leg shipmate. Hard telling what mods those Russians did to the old DKM boats. They tried all sorts of things that didnt work, and they usually overbuilt with the "stronger is better" mentality. I havent seen any other boats like that so it was either for a unique mission project or they found a better way to acomplish the mission. When the Soviets got all those state of the art subs it was sort of like a farm boy trying to work on a fine German clock with a hammer and sickle.

Seehund, if I was to take a stab a guessing.
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

Isn't that the submarine they used in the movie U571? The S-33 disguised as a German u-boat.

Well if thats true then all bets are off. It does appear to have an S boat bow as this picture shows:

I wonder why the picture caption says K-19?

because its a hollywood prop used in K19 the widdowmaker, U571, Raiders of the lost ark, 1941, and who knows what else. The bow is an S boat type but the hull has U boat style limber holes and ballast tanks. My guess is it may have been an S boat that escaped the scrap yard somehow in the late 40s and ended up in a hollywood back lot. Then the property department did some cosmetic modification over the years. Ill bet Harrison Ford could tell you about it, it seems hes spent some time on it, here and there.

688s? How come there's oil-canning under the bow?

Non-pressure hull areas are thin stuff. Subject to deformation by wave action and broaching for the camera.
