Somebody else needs to play here, too, because you're sure to get me on one of these.
The sub in question is the Asashio, a Japanese Harushio class SS that's now an AIP test bed. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harushio_class_submarine).
The Japanese sub force looks pretty interesting. They build a lot of subs, and seem to retire them after (only) twenty years of service. Both the Japanese and the Dutch got a lot of mileage out of the US Barbel design, something the US didn't really capitalize on.
