I'm putting my hand up for an x craft hull.....

The Kemp drawings.....I seem to recall reading somewhere that the drawings are an accurate reproduction of the restored x craft at Gosport. Problem being that it had been inaccurately replated at some point.

Thanks for the information, but I want to underline I'm not selling anything or taking orders - nor am I interested in orders later on.

I'll let you people know how the guy I contract gets on with my boat (should he accept the work). I'm interested if others are interested, purely from a point of view of mould ownership. When I get any boat hull built as a commission, I normally end up buying, plug (tool), moulds, and hull. It becomes cheaper if the guy I use wants to keep the mould to make hull's for others. At this stage I don't even have my project locked in.

The x-craft is a pretty easy shape to render. They were basically shrunk down and simplified Holland boats, and the shape was designed to be swiftly fabricated with a bare minimum of compound curves.

I'm going to the warehouse tomorrow, and hope to fire up the vacu-former and run off some hulls of the X Craft. I'll keep you informed as to our progress.

No. The Darnell hull is considerably smaller at about 1/16th scale. Still available in GRP from Models by Design.

And that model is greatly inaccurate, especially the dive planes and rudder support areas.

My vacu-from is taken directly from a model given to me by Alan Poole. Dive planes and rudder also molded from Alan's boat.

It was modelled pre internet, and when information was far more difficult to come by. They build into nice working models, but if it's 100% authenticity you're after then you need to look at a different model. Alan's model is excellent, but is a big old bird- not back seat of the car size, at least not UK back seat of the car size.

This X Craft model is 51" long at 1:12 scale

My Revell Gato is 52"
My M1 is 51"

Most boats coming out of Europe are 1:32 ish and so are even bigger.

I checked my car, a Jag XK8 convertible with miserably small back seats, and it's tight, and I'd have to place it in there on an angle, but the wife's Lincoln has oodles of room. Perhaps, because it is rather chunky, it just looks bigger!

I tend to gravitate towards models between 1-3 feet. If they are bigger, then I look to see if they can be radially split. The x-craft is an ideal candidate for radial separation because it was designed to be built in sections which were bolted together, so you can break it at one of those points. That makes for a very easy model to transport. However transportation isn't the only factor I look at, the draft of a model is something worth looking at, as that tends to limit where it can be sailed.
