Got a proposal for you guys:

I've done a lot of non-model submarine model work in my time. Much of the techniques, materials, and methodology directly applicable to the static or r/c submarine model kit-assembler or scratch-builder. Much of that work dealing with science fiction and old spacecraft concepts. I also did a lot of TV and motion picture effects work, and our bread-and-butter for a few years was building industrial trade-show displays.

I'm canvasing to see if there's any interest. I'm stuck here in the house (some medical issues have worked to keep me out of the shop for awhile), and started scanning my massive collection of slides and negatives into the hard-drive while I await a return to good health. I would reduce all this good stuff to proper WIP type threads, but only if there is a want/need out there for the material. Don't want to waste my time and/or bore the crap out of the readers here.

I've been absent from the forum for a while.. But, yeah, I think it would be interesting to see movie and TV effects/model work that you did in the past. 70s and 80s movies had some of the coolest miniature and model effects!

Absolutely, I would like to see and read about it! You made the point, there are techniques we can directly use in submarines. Plus, I think many of us grew up watching Sci-Fi movies or seeing miniatures being used in film or television and getting a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes or how was that made, just adds to the enjoyment we have about miniatures.
I am looking at those photo samples thinking you are a machine. You have a ton of talent and skills, that honestly, I do not think I will ever attain. However, your work inspires me to be better and it probably does that for others as well. Even those we never knew visiting the pages.
As warpatroller already said, get better soon!

Thanks to the good graces and generocity of the Caswell Familey we have this forum. No need for ads other than the banners Mike runs at the top of the pages.

Tell you what, I'll kick it off with some teaser photos. A survey if you will. Let's see what picture gets the most activity from you guys, and that's the subject I'll start in with. How's that, sports-fan's?

OK Dave.......I like the Japanese sub in picture number 9. Very cool indeed. Its pictured along with its Sub-driver. Is such a model available to the great unwashed or is the supply limited. Looks like maybe a 2" cylinder with a teeny weeny ballast tank

It's one of our 1.25" SD's equipped with a LPB type ballast sub-system. This is the final version of that unit built specifically for Gene Berger's Japanese Type-A Midget.

It all started about ten years ago when Gene (then the Editor of the SubCommittee Report) dragged my dumb ass to the airport and got us a flight to New London for a days documenting of the Type-A on exhibit outside the new digs (outside the base gate) of the Submarine Force Library and Museum. He was all measuring-tape, graph-paper, cameras, and eye-balls. I held his coat. This obviously was not his first rodeo! We flew back that evening, and he got to work on the drawings.

If I recall his working drawings were done in a week or so, he did all the masters and I helped with the sail and stern-cone tools.

Other than that, all the work was Gene's. This was the time when I was just getting into the small stuff and had developed a dynamic (no ballast sub-system) SD for the small plastic model submarine kits out there, so I did an initial layout for Gene's Type-A

Gene went on to complete the model, but I fell way behind with the SD as I started to bog down with the Caswell work (work is good!!!!). Early this year he took it along with him to one of our Nauticus runs.

In the time between my first SD mock-up for the thing and today several important things happened that permitted me to make a ballast sub-system equipped 1.25" SD possible: Availability of the very small microbe-sized linear servos, and very small receivers.

These two innovations permitted me to shorten total cylinder length by nearly two inches -- that's HUGE when you're dealing with small **** (ain't that right, Tom!). These were enabling changes; I now have the axial room I need to place a ballast tank.

The third big deal was refinement of the ballast tank vent -- eventually achieving a mechanism that insured positive closure and opening of the vent valve (a slide-valve) through use of compression magnets. Don't ask!



This is a block diagram of how all the devices are arranged and hooked up within Gene's SD.

And here's the completed system. I dropped it off at Gene's last week.

And now Gene's busy working out the drive-shaft and control surface push-rod interfaces. Rotsa Ruck, pal!

I found my Waldo. at the waldomart. his name is Ko Hyo Teki. Was the Ha19 in fromt of the Chief's club by the main gate when you were in KW? Ive been wanting to build that one in particular, for some time. The one up in NL is similar, but the 19 was the only survivor of the 5 Pearl Harbor boats, which were early "A"s. Its in Texas now at the WWII memorial, but I managed to get lots of pictures of it while it was here. The counter rotation box has got my serious attention. That is neet! What scale is the boat?

In my time that boat was on display at the 'light-house museum', not far from the main gate. It was outside and rusting terribly. That was the late 60's.

Yeah, Gene is an uber-modeler of the first order. His work -- both mechanical, and exterior -- is to die for.
