Pretty much the same work done for Red October -- designed and build all the propeller masters. Additionally, for Crimson Tide, I helped design the AKULA and provided the dope from which they built the torpedo miniatures. And gave some pointers on submarine choreography on both flicks.

Love the scene where the torpedo explodes under the stern of the akula. I remember watching an episode on Movie Magic showing how it was done in a water-filled tank with some white paint mixed in. Think they used the same technique in Abyss.

It premiered on UK TV on Christmas eve, i must have been 11 or 12. My father and I were supposed to be helping sort the house out as we had a houseful coming round for christmas dinner. We both ended up sat on the sofa glued to the movie. Rock Hudson yeah, but the star for me was Patrick (the prisoner) McGoohan the dodgy brit spook

Hard to imagine the terribly crowded and low-tech conditions under which those
u-boot sailors had to live and fight for the Fatherland. Not to mention their having
to be the actual "ballast" in order to dive quickly.

For sure, they were most dedicated young men!

Down Periscope used the USS Pampanito, and old Balao Class Submarine that is tethered in San Francisco. We were just there a couple of weeks ago and took the kids aboard. What a cool experience!
