WTC and/or Conv kit for Revell 1/72 Gato

I will eventually be building a Gato. Would love to find a D&E conversion kit and wtc if for some really weird reason someone has one they never got around to using.. Yes, I know - good luck with that request LOL - but still, is there one out there?

(Suspecting not , I also sent a note to Ron at R&R to see if he has a wtc that he would recommend for a Gato).

Stop whining, and get to work, Tim! Read my how-to on that kit and build your own stuff. A tough task for a newbie in this game. Bottom line: you ain't worthy yet.

Here's a thought; now that you're all cocky after the 212 pay-off, consider this:

The GATO conversion might be -- at this early point in your evolution -- a bridge too far. May I suggest you work up a 1/72 SKIPJACK first. I'll help you with the SD and you take it from there. Get that under your belt and you'll be equipped to see the GATO project to a successful conclusion.

The 212 is a dry-hull. You're yet to get into the world of the wet-hull. The SKIPJACK project will introduce you to the care and feeding of a wet-hull without the 'crazy' of the GATO; that boat too much of a jump for you, in my opinion.

Well……I was thinking way down the line - rabbit hole disease.- LOL!!!! Good points and thanks David. Just thought I’d start the Gato wtc/conv parts search early (yes, the Gato kit is on the shelf since I got a price I couldn’t walk away from) . Maybe one day I can tackle building my own WTC and earn my big-boy pants!!

Actually I have already started my 2nd sub - the 1/72 Virginia - TOTALLY jazzed about her. Whole different ballgame then the “cut and paste” 212A. I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts re. pros and cons of adding an angle keeper to equallize the dual tanks on my R&R cylinder. I don’t have the experience to know if that is overkill or not but trying to bone up on it.

The 1/72 VIRGINIA is a fine hull for your 'second' boat, Tim. A wet-hull, and a 2.5" cylinder in there will give you the annular space in which to place fixed ballast weight and buoyant foam with little effort.

Don't screw around with two independent ballast tanks -- gang them together to function as one -- KISS, damnit!

And operate the ballast tanks either completely empty or completely full. Forget any thoughts of c.g. shifting or 'hovering'.

An angle-keeper working to get slow-to-respond sub-systems (differently driving the two ballast tanks) is a fool's errand. Oscillation City! If implemented such a cluster-**** will (if driving water-pumps, pistons, or gas reservoirs) result in an endless cycle of pitch-up, pitch-down stupidity. DON'T DO IT!

Stop being such an eager-beaver, fan-boy, gadgeteer, Tim. Tone it down before you give yourself a ****ing stroke, already! This **** is supposed to be fun.

(Hey... am I talking to Tim, or is this Rommel who managed to hack Tim's account????).

          Timothy,

I rep R&R and can hook you up with a cylinder sized for the Gato. 70mm with custom specs. Buy from me and you get the support, but you're more than welcome to approach Ron directly if you feel the need.

Always more than happy to buy thru you Bob - but thought you were not stocking R&R until he recovered 100% and could meet your supply needs. Good to know you are handling them again. Thanks.

I love working with prey that knows and abides by the rules of the hunt.

                Let the games begin!

What ever gave you the idea that I hacked Tim's account.

My sub would have active/passive sonar, torpedo WRT, inertial navigation system, gas generator vertical launch system for launching rockets, gas generator emergency ballast blow system, working counter measure launchers, deployable emergncy buoy and a shaftless drive system.

Make it simple, make strong, make it work!

Yeah. You're right. I apologize. What was I thinking???

Still, it might be a good idea to grab a Revell 1/72 Gato in any case and keep in cold storage till the appropriate time.

Yep - I just couldn’t walk away from one for 80 bucks so now it’s on the project stack LOL!

Would be great if you could get a copy of David's Gato conversion DVD. In it, he shows how to convert/modify the kit parts for RC use.

Last year when I first became totally fascinated with RC subs, my first purchases were David’s DVDs and Bob Martin’s book. I will probably have to read Bob‘s book and watch the videos a dozen times to get things through my thick skull and to get used to calling David a craftsman rather than an artist (His request LOL). Both the DVDs and Bob’s book are great.
