Could The Sinking and Saving of Tigerfish Happen?

Watching Ice Station Zebra again, could the torpedo room flooding have been reversed? Sinking to that depth, could the reactor and propulsion be abused that way to reverse their sinking. I say no. Implosion would have happened first. Would an Merriman WTC have survived? Opinions?

Of the 40,000 men who served on German submarines, 30,000 never returned.”

They were shallow enough so that compartment 'salvage air' could be used to lower the differential pressure between sea water (getting in through the torpedo tube muzzle and breech doors) and the atmosphere in the forward room. That decreased the water flow to a rate where the breech door could be shut, and the locking ring rotated (the boats down angle during all this happy horse-**** helped with that a great deal).

Always wondered. Thanks for the explanation.

How about the Gray Lady Down scenario.
Would they been still able to surface the ship despite the flooded compartment? In the movie it was the enginnering space so they lost power to drive the ship up. But "what if" it was somewhere else?

It depends on which space is flooding and what the floodable volume percentage for that space is. On our modern, 2 compartment ships the answer is no, you will not save the ship. The older classes, with multiple compartments could be saved if a smaller compartment was involved. If you reach a small percentage of the Engine Room or Operations, she's a goner!!!
