The auxiliary fixed stern vanes rendered the bow planes redundant.

      For me yes.

Dave tried something, and he found them to be practical. He had an idea (which he got from a source), and unlike most, tried it, and liked it.
That gives him credibility in my mind.

However, thinking she has enough control surfaces, and actually have never seen them ( manta ray fins) move that way, I prefer understanding said appendages as enhanced passive sonar arrays as outlined in my lengthy but useless thread posted elsewhere.

As a fictional boat, one is free to believe it as they want.

I just like busting "Lord Grand Admiral of the High Seas" gonads about it where it will promptly put me in my place with a hearty "F- You ED!" . Where once again the Universe attains equilibrium. AT least for me.

What's really right anyway? (psssst he knows I'm right!)

NEVER underestimate the power of a Sailor who served aboard a submarine.

We loose our edge unless we get a little nut cracking in. Like Ed said a F U from David and we all snicker and get back to work knowing the universe will not collapse on itself for today.
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

Dave says FU to some folks. It only means he loves you. He’d give you the shirt off his back.
Of the 40,000 men who served on German submarines, 30,000 never returned.”

His heart is the size of an elephant. I have watched him kick someone in the pants only to get them to a better position to succeed. You are right Casey, if it was needed he would give you the shirt off his back.
