I love the Type XXIII photos. The first ones posted show training subs. The recce mark is the white band around the turm (sail). The ones of U-171 are of Hecht, which spent about 10 years in Davy Jones' Locker before being re-floated and refurbished. With two torpedos loaded externally, these were among the more practical mini-subs of the war. Though much bigger than anything the British, Italians, or Japanese used as a mini-sub, these were far more successful for general purpose use. These were probably pretty maneuverable, since the rudder is in the prop-wash and because it's got fore and aft dive planes both situated well below the waterline.Comment

You mentioned the stripe around the sail as being white. Is it accurate that the type 21s had yellow stripes around theirs?IT TAKES GREAT INTELLIGENCE TO FAKE SUCH STUPIDITY!Comment

I just did a quick Internet search. Looks like the consensus is that the prototypes--the real subs, not models--had yellow, not white stripes. I've seen a few Type XXIII models with the stripes in white. That said, I can't remember seeing a color photo of a Type XXIII, so I can see why somebody would have chosen white based off a B&W photo. In B&W, the stripe looks white. One of the big hazards of this game. Takes a lot of research and you can still get some fundamentals wrong...Comment

I only brought it up because I built the little Revell type 21 1/144 scale and the decal sheet came with a yellow stripe. So I thought it possible that maybe the 23s had white stripes. Maybe Hitler began to frown on yellow.IT TAKES GREAT INTELLIGENCE TO FAKE SUCH STUPIDITY!Comment

Sonar image of a U boat half buried on the bottom. Notice the four escape shafts on the starboard side of the hull. They should be on the port side , showing that this image is reversed. The shape indicates a type 7. Good definition for a sonar picture. Im quite impressed!Last edited by greenman407; 04-30-2011, 08:21 AM.IT TAKES GREAT INTELLIGENCE TO FAKE SUCH STUPIDITY!Comment
