Previously on "I SPY" it was mentioned about the snorkle attachment on the side of the conning tower. Heres one on U-190
This is the older style of snorkle. You can see the hydraulic cylinder rod at the bottom of the picture.
The motor room looks clean and new.
The control room. These pictures were taken after the surrender of the boat to Canadian forces at the order of Donitz at wars end. This sub had just sunk a Canadian ASW vessel days previously. Four men were lost. To extract their revenge, the Canadians took U-190 to the exact coordinates that the sinking had taken place and in what was called operation "Scuttle" pounded the ship to death until it sank. It took 19 minutes. You can get more info if you google operation scuttle.http://www.uboat.net/history/u190.htmLast edited by greenman407; 04-07-2011, 09:46 AM.IT TAKES GREAT INTELLIGENCE TO FAKE SUCH STUPIDITY!Comment

Doing the Laundry? I have read of American submariners in WW2 using "Oilskin" clothes in wet weather for watch duty. Maybe this is the same thing and they are letting them dry out.
An attempt at camouflage from air attack.
In the background you can see another attempt at camouflage from the prying eyes of aircraft.
U-234 XB captured and running in formation with their captors.

Question about a schnorkel:
I see from the pix that the schnorkel has one opening. My understanding of a schnorkel is that they ought to have two pipes, one for air intake and one for motor exhaust. Yet I only see one opening.
Can anyone explain this please?

The cook , dumping fish guts overboard?
This is a nice shot showing the detail of the upper spray deflector on the top edge of the conning tower. Note the difference between it and the picture three places above it in this post. I would have thought that the upper pictures deflecter would work better than this one which would still allow water to come thru right into your face.
