    Lest We Forget!

I've probably mentioned this a dozen times, but I like to remind myself and others of the sacrifices my dad and his submarine pals made in their fight against The Japanese. Dad was in HMS Sybil when she surfaced in Singapore Harbour after The Japanese surrendered on Aug 15 1945.

Dad occasionally talked of the smell of Singapore Harbor being perfumed by fresh baked bread, which they used to make corned beef sandwiches to feed the poor souls, so this photo seems appropriate. Whether these men were actual prisoners in Changi Jail, I am not sure.

Here's a link about those times on BBC online news.

Unspeakable atrocities committed by the Japanese wherever they went and there has never been one word of apology or ownership of what they did.

Agreed completely. 3 family members with gruesome ends at the hands of the Japanese. All coast watchers. I didn't know them personally but their legend and suffering for others' freedom resinates through my family.

For a true account of their "care" of the POW's in their prison camps I recommend the book "The Flyboys". It details what happened to those unlucky enough to be captured and interned by them. President Bush was almost captured when his TBM ws shot down right off this island .

Another book worth reading or listening to is Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. Also a recent movie made.
I listened to a copy from the library. It follows the life of Louis Zamperini and others on his plane.

A damned good movie too! The classic is "Bridge Over The River Quai!" (sp?) I think David Niven was in it. Our next door neighbor (when I was a kid) worked on the railroad, and we would often hear his screams as his nightmares returned images of this hell.
