Made it to Subfest. The water was just a little cloudy. Not crystal clear but can still see to the bottom. Much better than what I am used to running in though for sure.

When we arrived David M., Ernie and Casey were already there so we set up and then proceeded to get the frequency board mounted and lay out the course.

Eventually Vaughn arrived with his huge Typhoon that he towed all the way from Texas.

    Hi Steve,

Happy that you and your sons had a safe trip!

And a very special "THANK YOU" for taking the time to post up some great photos and information as to what is happening at Subfest! I for one will certainly be checking in to see how things are going! Thanks again Steve!

Hope you have a great time!! :-))

Vaughn is not going to put that Typhoon in Red Clay! Is he? Nah!

        Thanks Casey,

Is that your Fletcher in the photo? Looks like there are some nice-looking subs there as well!

We were able to get into the fence on Thursday to begin the setup process and it helped immensely by allowing activities to be accomplished the day before instead of the first morning of the event. Much less stressful as a result. Here are some more pictures from the event. It was well attended this year and Bob did a good job running it. Rather than have so many competitions this year there were 3 "challenges" that upon completion garnered merit badges to be added to a main badge that all skippers got for registering. I liked the format very well. There was a docking challenge, a course challenge and a conning challenge where the skipper was instructed through the course while his back was turned to it. There was also a "submarine race". 3 laps on a figure 8 course, winner take all. Enough boats were in the race to make the cross over point exciting at times. It was very fun to watch. Additionally there was the skippers choice awards for best scale, best engineered and best running boats. We filled up two pavilions with boats. Red Clay Resort was an excellent host as usual providing us with coffee and pastries in the mornings and lunch mid-day. Darrell Sprayberry treated us to on site dinners of Low Country boil on Friday and grilled Ribeye steaks, salads and baked potatoes on Saturday. On Friday we had a movie night on a 120" screen under the stars. David M. brought "Hell and High Water" and "Ice Station Zebra" for our viewing pleasure. It was the first year we tried this and it was well received. We also enjoyed a fire in a fire pit. Several of us slept on site in hammocks, tents, trailers, campers or RV's. My two boys even slept in Vaughn's huge Typhoon one night. The weather was again perfect and the comradery excellent. The discussion sessions were well attended and we had plenty of time to run boats or work on them as needed. The night run on Saturday saw about 7-8 boats participate. It was a time to relax. All in all just an excellent time. It was wonderful to see some good friends again and meet new ones. Tom even drove 1900 miles from Las Vegas to be there again. Wow! Enough waffle... here are the pics. Wish I had taken more but my phone spent a lot of time running my Fifish. I hope my son managed to get some decent video with it.

Ditto what Steve said. I didn't get to do the challenges as I spent a lot of time fixing both of my boats. Didn't get to wander around and talk and take pictures much as once I got my boats working they went into the water. Both boats had failures 1-2 days before we left. But I did participate in the figure eight race which was a blast! And ran both boats at the night sail which was also awesome! Vaughn's boat was a rocket running at night. And we had a sea-monster at the night run with Nathan in the water.

Didn't take many pictures either. Here is what I have. Also posted them on my Instagram account. On our way down, we left Tuesday, stayed in Luray to see the cavern on Wednesday, then left Thursday to make it to Red Clay. Going home, we decided to try a straight thru drive with minimal stops. Left Red Clay at 10:30am, arrived home 13 hours later at 11:30pm. It's about a 800 mile one way trip for us.

Thought I took a few pictures of Mike Martin's Seehund, but don't see them on my phone. He did a great job on detailing and weathering. In particular the entire hull had that surface rust, paint, repainted mottled look to it. When I got back to our hotel room, the stucco walls had that same look on a larger scale. In short, someone explained how he did it, but would like to hear again how.

                          Let me add....

Big thank you's to David for the ESC so I could fix my Marlin. And another one for Ernie for the 2IS to fix my Skipjack ballast tank problem.

And I gave David a micro servo which he gave to someone else who needed it.

Love the camaraderie at these events!

Mike said he thinned down some spot putty with lacquer thinner and brushed/dobbed it on then lightly sanded it to knock off the high points. He didn't even sand the 3D printed hull prior to that.

I so appreciate Bob's SubFest events; the way he's structured them and administers the events -- harkens back to the good old days of Groton (and recent Groton events are on the right track). A bunch of like-minded, anti-social, hygene-callenged, severe ADHD, long-haired, sloppy dressing, gear-head-whackos working together to feed they're mutual addiction.

Hat's off to Bob and Jason for making this thing work!
