    1/96 Scale Shipyard Alpha

This has been a work in progress for a few months now. It started as a bit of a fantasy but is now taking shape in slow kind of way. The hull is a very well produced GRP item with lots of great detail supplied by Scale shipyard in 1/96 scale. Its been around for quite a while and was revised by Kevin at Rogue Sub Works who produced a slightly more accurate set of rear planes and inlet scoops.

This is the hull following the 'Z' cut.Click image for larger version

Attachment of full flying rudder and stern planes. The brass rod is temporary; I'll cut it out once the glue sets at the base of each rear plane. Once that's done I'll fit the fit the rear cone top and trial fit the stern bearings. Note the glass of red wine - essential building requirement and first class lubricant!Click image for larger version

Slight cheat with the rear alignment.

ID:	89942Masked up and ready for the salt. The second photo is the test bucket. Smaller salt grains on the left and larger on the right. Smaller grains give a more even, flakey look.

ID:	89955 The photographs that I have of the Alpha show the white scum line around the water line and then a crappy khaki green colour fading to whitish grey and red further down the hull. I've tried the capture that but now that its done I think I prefer Mr M's Thalo Green fading onto black. It just looks better some how. Anyway, on with the experiments.

The Alpha currently has the wrong propellor; currently waiting for a new one.

Where are you getting the "right" prop from?

David is digging around in his pile of bits and pieces to see if he has one that is right.

This is the latest shade of green. Probably a bit TOO green. All of the photographs that I have show a dirtier, khaki green band below the white band at the waterline but its very hard to capture.Click image for larger version

I've been looking for some decent mast photographs of the Alpha. This is the current "best guess" version but its a bit rough. The boat is great to drive, although the turning circle is quite large. Its currently sharing a 2"sub driver with a D & E 212. I'm wondering how it would go with a 2.5" driver? Changing over the 2" driver is a bit of a chore because of the "X" driver etc etc. Maybe a nice 2.5" snort system would be good (hope my wife is reading this!).Click image for larger version
