You would think redoing a water line would be easy uhh... Well if one was more careful with ones equipment it would have been!!! In short I hadn't realized that I had somehow bent the tip of my No2 airbrush needle and I though colour matching the line was going to be the big ask of myself. Anyway enough moaning and b******g Alec you got the job done!!!
Granted the line is a little thicker that the rest but at least its a bit truer to the rest of the hull.....
But wait! Whilst I had out the paints and tools I decided to give the lower hull a bit more weathering. As I said the toothpaste thing didn't get there for me but an old 25mm paint brush from the house painting tools did. before dipping brush to paint I played with some washes and a thinned out white. A red wash mixed with the white came out a bit soft n pink so I added some burnt orange to the mix and then dipped in the brush just enough to get the tips only wet with paint. Oh and I didn't stir the mix I let the brush do that as I dabbed it on the model. The brush is a tad old and flared which is why it was perfect for this job. After I had blotted the brush like a manic schizophrenic artist I then used the brush to dry-brush over the hull. Then it was over sprayed, twice, with a rust wash before a mist of white wash was applied. Again I used the fine 3m scourer/sanding pad to rub it all down before randomly spraying a G.I green in patches which I blotted with the little house brush to coarse it up rather than have a soft blended spray patch. Then all that is covered by a good coating of a clear flat.
Now I reckon I am done and in time to enter it in the hobby expo this coming week-end here in Brisbane along with the Disney Nautilus. Mmm... I just realized that this is the first time I won't have entered a Sci-Fi space ship or some sort of figure...Cheers,
Alec.

"And it seems photobucket found a lengthwise bow shot of the lower hull some how offensive and in breech!!"
What's up with that? Seeessh. I got it, to sexy for the web! The Gato is going to get wet this evening and I will post an update. Thanks for asking! If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.Comment

Well after yesterday arvo I can officially say it is finished. All that is left is me learning to pilot the thing better... The Titanic Anyway after spending the first part of Saturday with the wife out shopping and hunting down a new mobile phone and plan then doing all the lawn work I have neglected over the last few weeks I decided to take out the Akula to one of the local puddles here in the estate. We have three here, the biggest is the original dam from the property before development. It is not rc boat friendly as it is full of submerged trees and is full of drifting weed and alge banks. The smaller middle one is where I've taken the Seaview & Gato for some tests and runs. However we haven't had any rain here for about 2 months so it is a little scungy at the moment as it normally flows over a small rock wall to the third lake so it is full of duck weed and alge bloom. The bottom one is a decent size but not that rc user friendly either, as it is surrounded by a sandstone block wall that raises the bank about 2 feet above the water and these are surrounded by various gardens. However it is split in two by a road bridge and it is in the bottom third that I went yesterday. It runs a fountain in the middle that runs 24/7 and there is some sort of recirculation system with them as well so apart from local wind rubbish from the area and lazy sods using the adjacent parks & grounds the water is pretty good per-say. At its bottom end is a gravel ramp of sorts left over from construction which made getting into the water a treat. The only danger on this pond is the wall of bull rushes that ring the edge...
Ok enough of the topography lesson... Please forgive the poor pictures as I took these on my mobile whilst operating the tx unit. A lot must be said for having a camera person or at least a tripod... Now I have got to say that this boat is as much fun to drive as the Gato.(Sorry David) with the slightly over-sized and out of scale planes and rudders it has handling, turning, diving and surfacing are very respectable and responsive indeed. Also with the type of ballast system it has I found I could get it to pretty much 'hover' with the scopes just below the surface  I also never notice any unusual pitch or roll from how water and air sit in the tank and I don't believe this tank has baffles either. Now having said that, logic and some cowardice ruled here with the hover test runs. So it never strayed to far from the shallows off the gravel ramp Scuba Diving
Most of the time though I just ran it with the scopes n masts broaching the surface at just above the sail. I also played with the epa on the throttle stick and found running it at 65% forward throttle not only gave a truer scale speed but also helped it run level under water and not pitch the nose down as I have found it does at much higher speeds!? and if id did start to glide down a little rise on the forward planes fixed that. Most of the underwater runs had me only running the right hand stick which controls both motor & rudder. you got to love the ADF2 auto leveler.
Even on its own running with decks almost awash it has a nice look and even a bit sinister... LOL
Cheers,
Alec.

Thats how my old tx was set and the new one came that way too. Maybe thats the default mode down here in oz... my prefered set up is,
Channel 1 for the rudder
2 for the rear planes
3 for the motors with the ratchet still in place so all I do is thumb the rudder...
4 for the front planes
5 for the lpb or the open/close servo
6 for the ballast
Being a right hander it works for me.Cheers,
Alec.

If you get one of those little 808 keyfob cams, you can attach them to a baseball hat or a pair of glasses (or sunglasses) so that the camera tracks your line of sight. Hands free filming. You could do the same thing with a mobile camera I guess, but you'd look a bit of a pillock with one of those strapped to your forehead.
If you get one I recommend a version 16 (720P recording).
Find many great new & used options and get the best deals for Mini DVR 808 Car Key Chain Micro Camera #16 Real HD 720P H.264 Pocket Camcorder at the best online prices at eBay UK! Free delivery for many products!
Still shot taken from some footage shot with a version 16 808.
A depth controller on the front planes will probably deal with any bow down shenaningans. The subtech unit is the only standalone unit I know of currently for sale.Last edited by Subculture; 09-16-2012, 07:32 AM.Comment

You need to build a watertight housing. I moulded a few from GRP with a aluminium bayonet seal, with as close to optimal streamlining as I could get. No need to go that level- I've seen perfectly performing enclosures made from PVC pipe, old deodourant caps, even a tic-tac box etc.
