    S.M. U-5 - a long term project

I still love those WWI era submarines from the Kaiserliche Kriegsmarine. Simple designs form the time when folks learned how to build subs and how not to.... I did the S.M. U-1 quite a wjile ago. I plan to get it up and running again this winter. There's a very good S.M. U-9 built bei Bernhard Wenzel which is also the basis of the plastic kit by Das Werk which will be released this January. Just out of fun I decided to start sketching the U-5. The U-5 wasthe class boat for U-5 to U-8 and the first design that feaured more than one boat. I like the simple, elegant lines....so let's see where this goes. Here are the first CAD-drwaings. Hill and sail.

Yes, i like the lines of these early subs, too. However i like the streamlined, sci-fi like projects of the late Imperial Navy of 1918 even more. Always believed the later U-Boats beeing a step backwards to more conventional designs. Good luck with your project and schöne Feiertage!

Danke.....I plan to draw a UC II baot as well. That will be one of the futuristic designs but much more complicated to model.

I may be confused as to exactly which boat you're planning to build. Attached is a picture of what I believe to be Austro-Hungarian SMU-5. For you trivia fans that's probably Kapitan von Trapp up top - yes that von Trapp - but not singing here. I only bring this up because the two boats - this and your drawing - don't look the same to my eye.

It's the German U-5. In WWI bot Austria-Hungary and Germany were monarchies. Thus the abbreviation SM (Seiner Mejestät; "her majesty's"). The one you show is a Holland type boat.

OK, I think I understand. You want to build the German U-5 and I'm talking about the Austro-Hungarian SMU-5. Please see link...

            Is that correct?

Thanks for your patience and help,
