    U Boote in Texas

This build thread will cover three boats here in San Angelo Texas. We will be restoring a Robbe Type XXI, and building a Robbe Type VII, and Bronco Type XXIII. Working on these boats will be myself and my clubmate Carl Malone. All boats will be "standoff" scale with effort made to as closely resemble the prototype as possible in a good running and robust model.(no rivet counters please) All three will utilize parts from Wikinger Modellbau and Maximus Modellbau, as well as the excellent type XXIII fittings set from Nautilus Drydock. Pics to follow ASAP

I would like to post pictures, but it would appear I am not authorized. This will be a very boring build thread.

      Stephen,

Why not? Is it just a matter of getting permission from the forum administrator? Something else?

Pity, I was looking forward to seeing your U-47.

Stephen, when you registered, you didn't click on the confirmation email that was sent. I just manually added you to the roster of registered users, so in theory you should be good to go now. Let me know if you have any issues!

I have assembled the Wikinger Modellbau tech rack. I have also come up with a low tech solution to the infamous screw joiner. As you can see the whole assembly is held together with a wing nut and 6-32 threaded rod. The bit which passes through the o ring is sleeved with brass tube silver soldered on. A fat o ring and washer completes the assembly. Bath tub test say it’s water tight. I am modifying the hull bracing so that the entire WTC will slide out of the hull.

One can see in the pics, that the tech rack is empty. The plan is to install the Maximus Modellbau bladder style ballast tank. Three High torque mini servos for; rudder, stern planes, and bow planes and two Graupner Speed 500 brushless motors, which will be geared down 3 to 1. The Graupner brushless motors are low speed high torque, unlike most brushless motors. I am undecided on either a 7.2 or 11 volt battery setup. Whatever fits best with the max amps, for a long run time. I am open to suggestions.

Progress! Albeit slow progress, Wintergarten railing is installed I used eye pins to secure the railing stanchions to the base. Click image for larger version

I’m building U564 pretty much as she appeared fresh from the builders. So the tower will not have the Rod antenna housing or breakwater Venturi Very clean , very sleek

I can no longer source stabilit express in the States so... Sections are glued up with construction grade plastic weld followed by a generous fill of 30 minute epoxy thinned 20% to flow into all gaps. The bow has had an extra epoxy treatment with the bullnose being epoxy filled. The stock Robbe net cutter and screw joiner hole have been filled. The bow joint is about half the thickness of a stock build. An additional bulkhead will be added just aft of the bow caps to give the bow more of the type VII characteristic bluffness More to follow...

All of the vacuform parts were cleaned and rubbed down with 90% alcohol prior to glue. Also all epoxy areas got a rub with coarse grit sand paper for some tooth. None of the brace bulkheads have been installed yet. Extra bracing will be introduced, which will allow the entire WTC to slide out when needed

Stabilit express is a modified acrylic glue, there are alternative brands more readily available and cheaper. It has certain advantages over epoxy, as it keys into the material in a way epoxy doesn’’t. Also tends to set faster. Much more pungent smell until set though.
Good alternatives include- Devcon Plastic Welder II, Deluxe materials super crylic, UHU plus acrylit. Unbranded option from China on eBay e.g. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2pcs-A-B-...MAAOSwup1bwGpH

My method works well. The plastic weld followed by epoxy has held up on my Robbe Atlantis for 16 years. Same material. I have been scrolling through the McMaster Carr website, and am making a list! I am 99% certain I will utilize belt drives on this model. My current thinking? A pair of Graupner Speed 500 brushless motors (High torque low RPM) reduced 3-1 with a belt drive!
