    U-552 Trumpeter 1/48 static

    Hi everybody,
    I start this new topic of my U-552 1/48 Type VIIC U-Boat by Trumpeter. The kit is awesome, regarding the interiors, with enormous possibilities of superdetailing works, but, regarding the hull and the deck, is full of errors and imprecisions, replicating the same errors of Revell 1/72 model.
    Anyway, waiting for a methodical building report, I post some photos.
    Cheers

    Excellent. Looking forward to seeing it
    IT TAKES GREAT INTELLIGENCE TO FAKE SUCH STUPIDITY!

        Hi eveybody,
        building the Trumpeter1 1/48 U-552, I have the possibility and the intention of scratchbuild the whole bow structure, outside and in front of pressure hull; for doing it, I have only the drawings of David Westwood's book ( Anatomy of the ship ), that I post.
        Unfortunately, from those drawing, I'm not able to reconstruct the the complex structure of bow external casing: is there someone who had tried, in past, to do that ? Are available some 3D or axonometric drawings ?
        I'd like very much to scratchbuild this part of U-Boat, and the 1/48 scale allows a good precision, but I need help from U-Boat's experts....
        I hope someone can help me.
        Thanks in advance.
        Filippo

            Excellent work! This will be fun to watch you build your sub!
            If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

                    Continues the work on hull:
                    - modified the flooding holes under forward torpedo tubes;
                    - modified th flloding holes above the torpedo tubes;
                    - shortened the torpedo shutter doors.
                    Opinions welcome.
                    Cheers.

                      Outstanding detail work! Is the bow badly inaccurate in your opinion? Where is the error?

                        Hi Steve,
                        as I said, the Trumpeter's U-552 repeat the same errors as the Revell's 1/72: about the bow, all the flooding holes are wrong, in number and shape; the torpedo shutters are too much long; also the rivet's pattern and the welding lines are wrong, but this last error is not easily visible at not expert eyes....

                          It is disappointing when model manufacturers don't do their research enough and introduce errors. Trumpeter kit is not cheap either. I saw this unveiled at a model show and my first thought was "the deck slots are wrong in shape and pattern".

                            The Trumpeter VIIc seems to be a well adapted copy of the Revell 1:72 VIIc and the interior repeats many mistakes of the CMK resin compartments for the 1:73 Revell VIIc. But e.g. from the wrong periscope in the control room, I take it, that the kit designers also made a trip to the last remaining real VIIc in Laboe.
