I was going to say something smart aleck when I first read the comment by David, but thought naw, best be nice. That cat meme catches my reaction when I read the remark better than I could have worded it. Well done Andy (or do you prefer Andrew?)

I look upon it as an augmentative technology. Some are using it to completely replace existing methods of construction, but interestingly used that way it often leads to an inferior result.

Looking at things from the past thirty years or so, how many fully scratch build models- it's tiny and has been contracting with each decade. Most modellers build kits.

3D printing is a step up from kits in the creative category IMO, as it involves design. Sure grabbing something off thingiverse and then squirting it out on a cheap Chinese edm printer doesn't involve much talent, but if you're taking things from a sketch to a full 3d component it does involve skills.

The craft aspect is diminished, no question, but many have been turning their backs to that long before the advent of consumer level 3d printing.

But, I would be a fool to not acknowledge that the 'new' technology does my job better, faster, and cheaper. **** it, I'm determined to enjoy my retirement. Time to, as MacArthur put it, "... just fade away".
