So in the picture above with two subs and many tug boats; what submarine type is the one that the bow is facing the camera? Typhoon?

        Scott,
I believe it is a Typhoon.
        Peace,
        Tom
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

What is interesting about the 955 Borei is that it is the same length as the Typhoon. It is a huge sub, It might not be as wide as the Project 941 however this new Russian sub is about the same size as the Ohio, it's up there. Yes the boat in front of it is a Typhoon.

I am now in the finishing stages of getting the top profile right. I have spent a couple of hours eyeballing the overall shape and checking for symmetry, that one thing that is sooo subtle but once you notice it, it bugs you to fix it and it then goes on to change your whole perception of the model.

After working on the transition between the raised missile deck section and the forward deck ,taking the bulge out I then realised that the curve on either side where it radically changes width was not even. There was simply mode curve on one side than on the other. I realised that the best way to fix this would be by cutting off the front section and re-gluing it slightly sideways further over to one side. A cut and some glue and filler later and its looking much more symmetrical.

Looking at the back end of the missile deck made me notice that the tapering section and the back bulges too much like an ellipse. After close inspection of photographs it became apparent that this section tapers consistently in a straight line back to where it transitions smoothly into the stern hull section just in front of the rear rudder. I am happy with the flatness of the overall missile deck surfaces and forward section, after using the profile templates I am now also confident that the width along all sections of the missile deck are consistent and equal from the centreline.

Once this is done I will be adding the rectangular side pieces that will run along the length of the missile deck and will terminate before adding the rear vertical surfaces that will reduce in size as the rear deck lowers towards the rear hull.

Once again I hope these photos will turn the right way up. I have no control over this and it's rather frustrating.......

                    Greenman, Gantu,

Gantu, what is with you and hard to get photos? Well done, ! thank you. I am fortunate that there are plenty of pics of the bored class unlike Mike and Resolution. I do have a request/ challenge. Can you find more pics of the project 955 Borei's stern planes? The one that you posted with the drawing into it was tantalising and divergent from all the drawings I have. If you have good views looking down on the stern rear planes that would be great.

                    thanks,

                    david h

Being a creature of habit I find myself on a Friday afternoon once again typing up the material for the week. After a week flat out teaching I am ready to not have to solve everyone else's problems for at least 48 hours and may just find time to do some further work on Borei. I know, how sad, Friday night and I'm at home, still don't have the energy to go anywhere and too many little 'uns to look after...

Anyway, I have been busy here and there over the last week moving further with the missile deck and finally being in a position where the sides of the missile deck can get glued on. I have spent months getting symmetry as mentioned earlier with the top surface of the missile deck. I feel as though I am pretty much there after what seems like endless cycles of sanding, checking, filling, resin coating, sanding, checking and filling and ...I think that the overall shape is finally right and ready for the side sections to cut made the same then glued on. after cutting out the templates for the long rectangular sections that run the length of the missile section I would cut them out of thin pine from the school scrap heap and then get them square and the same.

Gluing these on and making sure they are parallel and even, I would then give a once over of filler. Cutting a paper template helped me work out the shape and profile of the front side panels that angle the lower missile sides upwards and bring a subtle downward slope to the missile deck at it both lowers and narrows towards the front section of the deck. These side pieces are essentially triangular in nature. Because the lower edges are moving slowly upward as it moves forward along a radius it can only have a gradual curve to it. This is the same with the back of the boat as well.

I have been thinking about how much construction I do on the missile deck before I actually screw and glue it down to my PVC masterpiece. Initially I though that I should just get the symmetry and a nice surface and then bolt it down, however I have now been thinking of completing virtually everything that needs doing on the missile deck, scribing and detail lines, outline of the sail area and all then bolting and gluing it down. It will certainly make it easier to put surface detail down on the missile deck if it is separate from the round hull which will want to roll. Once I do attach it permanently to the rest of the hull I can then tape around just above the edges and filler and sand the perimeter where there is the transition in surface between the deck and the round sides of the hull.

Once I had the triangular forward sections done I could then look at the back sections that go from the rear of the missile section in to a slow taper, diminishing and disappearing just before the vertical fin and rudder. This as mentioned with the forward section would feature a curved lower surface as effectively a straight line will have to bend as it rides up and across at a subtle angle, a radius. This is particularly noticeable if you look from the back of the boat at an angle off the stern sides and run your eye along the missile deck line as it meets the hull.

                      Anyway ,

                      enough for now.

ID:	117094Hello all,

Gantu, thanks for the pics. I particularly like the one of the rear deck, taken from a ship alongside. I could really do with some overhead shots.

After completing the sides of the missile deck and lots of filler, sanding, filler, sanding and primer, I then would go over the overall symmetry again along the missile section of the deck. After using a sliding bevel and templates it became apparent that the tumblehome on the side of the missile section was not consistent. One side having a slight angle down the missile section, the other side being virtually vertical. Filler on the affected side and now they are both equal.

I put the Mike alongside the Borei just to give an impression of size. Now the mike is 1/120, yes I know everyone says that it's an 'unusual' size, I don't know why, its a great convenient size, just ask Bob Martin...Now Borei is 1/140. If I made this boat in the same scale as the Mike I simply wouldn't be able to fit it easily into my car. The fact is you would think they were actually the same size. Their size difference works well together.

I have spent a week or so just once again checking symmetry. More resin coats then sanding back, then just working on getting the surface absolutely smooth and consistent. I am close to calling this done.

During the week I raided the scrap bin at school and pulled out two pieces of wood to make the sail. The sail / fin will be a three part affair with two side pieces and a top piece to boot. This sail fin is quite straightforward. It's overall a fairly simple shape punctuated by the distinctive forward rake of the forward section. It is really quite unusual and I would love comment on why the Russians designed it this way, I am perplexed... This sail is two pieces with the part line down the middle and two screws going up at and angle from underneath
