Another interesting fact about the Sombra verses Polk discussion is that the Sombra you can use it for either 72 MHZ or 75 MHZ. The Polk, you have to send back to them for them to reprogram. Just a little FYI. -
Now that the Sombra is in place and the right hand drive is fixed, she is now "Secure For Sea". I got to get my camera man and get her to the pond by sundown for some Dusk pictures and Video.Leave a comment:

If I can expand on what Mark observed above:
I have around fifteen working r/c submairnes, employing the entire range of SubDriver's. And ALL OF THEM were either assembled outright with a Sombra Labs receiver or were retro-fitted with one. I swear by these receivers. Polk's is second best in my opinion (not a slam, a well studied fact), but the Sombra product is absolutely the best receiver on the market for our needs.

Success! Now on to the second problem. The Polk receiver was on the list to be changed due to poor reception compared to the Sombras. Ive also noticed that the Seaviews servo, that controls the stern planes(which is hooked to the APC) would move back and forth on its own while the motors were running. WELL, GUESS WHAT???!!! With the Sombra in place, NO UNWANTED SERVO MOVEMENT!!! OUTSTANDING!!! I couldnt be happier with that! As the instructions that come with the Sombra says " the most advanced DSP signal detection, noise control, and glitch suppression algorithms". Best $64 I ever spent.........lately.
It's this sort of comment that we really need posted on our web page.

As I mentioned before, the right side drive stripped out on the previous days testing before the trip to the Park. I think that youll have to admit that, thats not an every day occurance. What happened? Well If you have been keeping up with my struggles over the past five years to learn and experience this hobby with various boats and on various Forums(Subcommittee), youll recall that I had an overheating problem with the motors on this boat. I tried different motors and replacing the "plastic" motor mount with a machined alluminum one. Also taking a piece of copper pipe and wrapping the motors with it to act as a heat sink. The real solution to the problem was advanced by HWSNBN ,who advised me to turn the 4 bladed empellors into 2 bladed ones. OH what a difference. But in the meantime by my fooling around with the motor mounts I failed to align the mesh of the gears properly. In the fourth picture you can see the right hand drive gear(shown on the left side of the picture). You can see how the very tip ends of the gear teeth are flat spotted, a sure indicator that the gears on that side were just barely touching. To be fair, you cant see inside to align them so you have to go by "feel". So I filled the previous holes in the bearing support plate with epoxy as you can see in the first 2 pictures. Then, after "feeling" for the proper alignment I will redrill the holes.

One thing thats obvious when watching the video on the preceeding page is that the new extended rudder is working well.Leave a comment:

Keep in mind that this is not the Moebius seaview. This is a 52" long Rick Teskey hull. It runs off of a special 3" Subdriver and some very interesting Dave Merriman manufactured parts. Parts like the sail which is a work of art and the rudders and planes and the shrouded empellors. It has two speed controls so that I can independantly control right and left drives. With them I can stand still and spin in place to change direction if I please. There is also night lighting. The headlight shines a bright blue and the eight windows light up and emit a more realistic "daylight" color. Then there is the navigation lights on the sides of the sail. Red, green and white. Soon I will do a photo and video shoot of operations in lower lighting showing the dazzling lights while in motion underwater.Leave a comment:
