    FDM or Resin?

For those who use both, which do you prefer for printing Hulls?

If the hull has a lot of fine detail, then resin is king. FDM tends to produce a stronger result, but needs more work to get a good finish. FDM will generally work out much cheaper in material costs.

I mainly work my patterns by hand using wood, but have used 3d printing as a tool for smaller patterns like control surfaces and jigs, then make a tool and mould items in GRP.

Thanks! What type resins do you use?

I've just used a generic brand of ABS like resin off ebay, Elegoo and Anycubic are fairly popular and reasonable, avoid the water washable stuff though. I've used my FDM far more though.

If you want make a printed hull really tough, sand the inside and line with some epoxy resin and cloth. Resin or FDM, that will hugely strengthen the hull.

I like ABS-like resin, but it can be brittle. I mix my resins to get a result that is tough and resilient to breaking. Siraya Tech has one (I have not tried yet) that is similar to what I use https://siraya.tech/products/siraya-...abs-like-resin
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

The new generation of fdm printers give a very good surface finish but resin gives better detail. Resin is pretty strong if the hull has a reasonable wall thickness. The mid size resin printers are big enough for the hull sections that most people have in their files. It is messier than fdm so you need a dedicated workplace for it. I would get at least a small resin printer to print out detail parts. That being said, if you have no experience, start with a new mid size fdm printer, they are much better than the old ones. I use esun ABS like filament and sira tech ABS like tough grey or navy grey resin. Resin costs about twice as much as filament. They are both sold on Amazon.
