          the writers of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home probably drew inspiration from this incident . When the Yorktown was disabled by the Cetacean probe the captain sends a distress signal stating they are deploying a solar sail to power their life systems.

          This show how even the most advanced vessels sometimes have to rely on "primitive" knowledge to survive.
          Make it simple, make strong, make it work!
