Your method will work, but there's a much cleaner way with a smaller form factor.
RayChem solder sleeve splices are waterproof when used properly. We even used these when splicing new submarine hydrophone cables! You can place two stripped wires in one end and the third from the opposite side. I have a sandwhich bag of these in my tool box that will outlive me.
