British K Class Submarines

It goes very well, really slips through the water- much like a modern nuke.

However turning isn't great. Dave Forrest who built the model in the top picture enlarged the rudders, which helped alot, but it still struggles to get round in a small pool/pond. It's a quite a chunky model at 1/32nd scale, so Dave made up a little auxiliary thruster which he clips underneath the boat when operating in tight confines. This is controlled from a separate TX/RX using some homemade electronics. The TX is basic- it just has a toggle switch which gives a bang-bang full left or full right, but it works very well.

I just realized that the K-class had 2 tall mast on it. They could have installed real sails if they needed to. :D
Gotta love that brass, but I'm wondering why they were made a Tan color. tho?
Surely the Originals were not that color?

The model pictured is the one based at Gosport I believe, if not it's an identical twin.

The M-class were based on K-class hulls after the remaining boats were cancelled owing to the disastrous legacy of those boats.

Unfortunately, they fared little better with M1 and M2 taking their crews with all hands. Only M3 survived, eventually being turned into an experimetal mine-layer, with some success, as the equipment developed on that boat was used on subsequent mine-laying submarines.

Here a couple of pictures of the K-class and M-class models at Gosport. not my best photographs, but the lighting in there is awful, and they're behind glass which doesn't help.

They were nicknamed 'The Suicide Club' by Royal Navy submariners. Not without just cause, they never took out a single enemy ship, but sent a lot of our own lads to davy jones locker.

This is a real interesting boat. Which makes it more appealing than the M class in my opinion.

Yes, they were designed as 'Multi-role' vessels (both surface and submerged), so they did not do very well in either of those roles. :rolleyes: Due to the technology available at the time.
Of course torpedoes were not very reliable during those years also, which was not a fault of the submarines design.

Anyone know what the object is below deck behind tower of the K-class?
At first it looked like a life boat hanging on hull :eek:, but after magnifying, I could see there's a hole there with something mounted in the hole ???
