whats the smallest 1/72 scale axis ocean going WW2 era model submarine??

okay... there is a purpose to this question! (has nothing to do with making it a functional RC sub..)

an older boat modeler and I were talking today and he brought up an 'old' technique he had mentioned before that I had forgotten about.

and that was rigging up a 'submarine' dragged behind a boat that would dynamically dive as the boat went faster.


thought it would be fun to set up a submarine to chase my 1/72 snowberry ... but my knowledge of various subs is rather limited... maybe a type XXI?

he told me they would just carve and layer wood with bent brass dive planes ... but if I could find a scale model to drag behind it would be fun :D

looks like the type XXIII may have been the one I was thinking in my brain... but if theres another other options out there

Actual subs that were towed included the WW-1 era British C-class and WW-2 era X-craft

I do not think he means towed sub as much as it would look cool to tow an Axis sub as if it was stalking the Snowberry.

yeah what he said ...

would look like it was chasing the snowberry ... like thin fishing line between them ... think I might just carve one out of foam, I know some methods to harden the exterior for paint/detail work and the like...

need to go see what the scale sizes for the smaller ocean subs are .. like the XXIII and the like ...

At 1/72nd scale any midget sub is going to be tiny, and it won't look very impressive in the water- spectators will think you've picked up a twig or something.

Something like a V80 would be a good choice. They never saw service as a belligerent weapon, but were active during wartime, so you can massage history a little perhaps. You could even fit radio in it and have a friend control depth and direction of the sub.

You'll need to keep the buoyancy very low and/or extend the hydroplane area if the boat is to have any reasonable diving ability.

yeah basically everything below water line will be out of scale .... its all for fun. my snowberry isn't perfect... neither will the sub chasing it LOL .. but 10-20ft out on the water it looks great :D

ideally it would be something 60ish percent the size of a type VII .... my snowberry's got far more then scale power haha, ideally it should have enough power to drag down the fake sub and still go scale 'emergency' speed (IE AHHHH SUB! )
