    Electronics setup questions!

    Givens:

    I have a Micro Viper 10 marine ESC.
    I also have a "Nano ESC" from Caswell, which is said to be exactly like the Micro Viper 10. Will be using this one in my 1 1/4" SD. (Or, not???)
    I have a Wfly 6-channel 75Mhz. TX ( Please don't tell me I should have gotten the 8-channel TX as I have no plans to ever need 8 channels!)
    I have a recently purchased Lepton6 RX. (Crystal has been subsequently ordered!) Again, no "lecturing" about the 8-channel, please!
    I have downloaded the "Wfly Radio System" setup info from the Caswell website, which deals with the 6-channel system.

    Questions:

    As I'm only utilizing motor control, rudder and rear dive planes on my current subs, according to the TX setup information,
    FWD/Reverse are assigned to channel #3. However, in reading the "hints and tips" for the Micro Viper 10, the speed control
    should be connected to channel 2!!?? This is a supposed "remedy" for the esc's led to stay on red. My question is, which is correct???
    Channel 2, or channel 3?

    Also, the Wfly setup calls for the rear dive plane servo to be connected to channel 2! Strange things hare afoot here!! The rudder is
    assigned to channel 1. O.K.! No conflict there!

    Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be any information available for the "Nano ESC", but if it is, indeed, the same as
    a Micro Viper 10, then I would assume (There's that nasty word again!) that everything should be the same! Should I consider that maybe
    "assumption is the mother of all F***-ups"?? However, the "micro viper instruction sheet" refers to both "red" and "green" LEDs!! Huh???

    Any help, and/or guidance, would be most appreciated!!

      Hello Garry,

      First, the Nano ESC is the same as the Micro Viper 10 but without the epoxy covering.

      Channel 3 is always used for the ESC on my Subs and is the left hand vertical movement on the transmitter.

      For my little Skipjack I used the following channles:
      1. Rudder Servo
      2. LipoGuard to ADF2 to Stern Plane Servo
      3. ESC
      4. Not Used
      5. Not Used
      6. Not Used

      Sorry but my Outlook packed up yesterday so I can't scan and send the drawing!

      You are welcome to come out to Hong Kong and buy me that beer!

      Regards,

      Myron

        Hi Gary,

        Myron's got the setup right. I'm not sure where the suggestion to hook your ESC up to channel 2 is coming from, but the channel assignments you should use will be a function of the radio you have and your preference on how you want use the sticks. The WFLY-6 has its channels assigned as follows:
        Right stick left/right => Channel 1
        Right stick up/down => Channel 2
        Left stick up/down => Channel 3
        Left stick left/right => Channel 4
        Switch => Channel 5
        Dial => Channel 6

        Now its up to you to choose where your control functions will be controlled from. Most modelers favour putting the throttle on the up/down movement of the left stick because it's not spring-return to neutral, to do that your ESC must be driven from channel 3. Active depth control generally ends up on the up/down movement of the right stick, so drive your stern planes from channel 2 (with any associate electonics connected in line per their intructions). Finally, the most common place you'll find rudder control is the left/right movement on the right stick and for that you need to drive your rudder from channel 1. I seem to remember making drawings for this kind of setup in the W-FLY 8 manual addendum I wrote - you might find it worth while to take a peek even though that's not the radio you have. The basic control setups are the same and the basic channel assignments are all the same, and it also provides additional information on how you might set up a more complicated boat if you choose to go there.

          Good morning, Myron and Kevin!!

          Many thanks to both of you for your responses. I very much appreciate your assistance!
          The conflicting information I read pretty much discouraged the he** out of me, because I was unable to
          get my little Skipjack setup to function. Then I saw where I was trying to use a RX crystal that the
          Lepton6 , apparently, didn't like!! The correct UM-1 is now on order! I had a 75Mhz, channel 69 crystal
          on hand, but it was a dual conversion, which doesn't play well with the Lepton!

          "We doan need no steenking standards"!! (LOL) Or DO we??????

          Geez!!! Way too much confusion for a sub-newby!! Hah!! The surface stuff, with the 2.4Ghz had me
          pretty spoiled! No-brainer "plug-and-play", which I'll stay with for my "targets"!

          O.K., guys!! Once again, a big thank you!! You made my weekend!

            BTW, Myron!!

            Guess I can dial your address into my GPS for that beer!!!??
            Hah!!

            Next time I can get out your way, I'll hook you up!!

            Have a good one!
