The SS United States passing by Fort Lauderdale today. She still holds the world speed record, crossing the Atlantic to and from, and still a majestic sight.Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_0002.jpg Views:	0 Size:	50.3 KB ID:	186367

Of the approximately 40,000 men who served on U-boats in WWII, it is estimated that around 28,000 to 30,000 lost their lives.

I would have to agree Casey, she is a majestic ship. She really has great lines...and would make a good model to build...

She was a remarkable ship from another era before Air travel put the last nail in the express super liner coffin era. he was designed as a troop transport and a luxury liner by Franci Gibb. It was his dream masterpiece as a Naval architect. Gibbs obsession of no wood aboard and memories of that terrible fire on the Normandie sunk at her per by the stupidity and incompetence of the of the New York City Fire department, along with the Navy yard workers that caused the fire, the French crew having been already dismissed and the workers unfamiliar with the elaborate modern fire protection system. besides not understanding any French. One of the world's greatest **** ups.

It made a huge impression on Degner Gbbs. And besides winning the Blue Ribbon by a wide margin over the previous record holder. The ships engines were never really given a FULL speed test to her limits! She may have been capable of even faster speeds. Knowng the square cub law, it may have been possble to squeeze a few knots more ...but We will never know.

Her funnels were made out of aluminum, which gave the welder’s nightmares.
