more like VN era SF collecting ears. Actually it was common practice to pick thru the flotsom, after sinking a ship, if time permitted. To gather anything for inteligance purposes, or that could be utilised by the boat, like any supplies. These items were often used for confermation of the sinking, as well. In the first WW the German pilots would actually land the aircraft near the wreckage of a "kill" and retrieve some "evidance" to get varification. Usually a piece of the aircrafts fabric with a number or insignia. I read somewhere, years ago, of a WWI pilot who retrieved an instrument {perhaps a compass or a guage} from the plane, with the dead pilots blood bone and brain matter spattered on it, for that purpose. BTW the large Plaquard forward on the 107, is from the Jagersfontein a Netharland steamer, 10,018 ton vessel sank on the 6th patrol as well, which leads me to believe that photo was taken July of 42 in Lorient shortly after arriving from the 6th patrol. There are only 6 trophies hanging, but they sank 7 ships, totaling 27,082 t. One was a small schooner, only 35 ton. The reason there are only 6 trophies, is because during one of the sinkings, they were attacked by alied aircraft and had to leave the scene. U 107 a IXB sank over 35 ships before going down with all hands in 44Last edited by Von Hilde; 10-12-2012, 12:58 PM.Comment

Thanks VonHilde for filling in the gaps. You really know your U Boats! I hope Im not boring anyone with these pictures. The Quality of the film and cameras in the fortys is certainly poor compared to today, but its all we have.

Mark,
I agree with David, it's becoming a nice collection of all aspects of the Uboat, keep them coming, and i also will add some more.

I've got me some stills from part of the german Wochenschau during the war, this episode was about the technical improvements on the Uboats, the schnorkel mast could only be raised while on the surface by a hydraulic ram, when raised, it was locked into the claw at the tower.
The other two are pictures showing the difference between the most common kugel head and the later introduced ringswimmer valve.

Certainly not boared, I look forward to your selection of pictures every day, and enjoy researching the details. I usually see something I have never seen or noticed and hijack a picture or two for my u boat file. Todays selection is the typeII splash. The watertite helm station with the attack scope, doesnt have the tower dropped over it yet. They must have been in a hurry to get that in the water. after a short research of that pic, I have stumbled upon a puzzel. The origional pic says its the launch of u57 a typIIC sept 39. Acoardig to the u boat records, u 57 was launched sept 38. No big deal, likely a typo, but it gave me a reason to recearch the history of that boat. Come to find out, it has quite a story. Actually, several interesting facts. It was sucessful, during its patrols, 11 sinkings. Eric Topp was one of the kapt.s during the war patrols. It was attack several times by the allies during its carrear. and it collided with a merchant and sank. It was raised and put back in service as a training boat for the remaining of the war and was scuttled at the end in 45.Last edited by Von Hilde; 10-14-2012, 09:55 AM.Comment
