    SAM Firing Submarine

Does the US have any SAM capable sub?

Not to my knowledge. Probably because they figure a subs place is below the waves. That certainly doesnt make them immune to air attack. They could be attacked by air launched torpedoes.
IT TAKES GREAT INTELLIGENCE TO FAKE SUCH STUPIDITY!

I remember reading an article in Popular Mechanics about 20 years ago about an idea to deploy a raft carrying missiles and sensor suite from a submerged submarine to attack hostile aircraft. A fiber optic cable connected the raft to the sub. Guess it never got off the drawing board.

SAMs really aint the mission for SSKs or SSNs or SSBNs.

I think it's more of a defensive system to protect the sub from torpedo carrying aircraft.

Stingers launched from the mast perhaps? - as per that great 80's and early 90's PC game Red Storm Rising
Although that would require the sub to be in a vulnerable position. Kind of defeats the purpose of being a sub.

SAM fired from a submarine at an ASW asset (surface or airborne) is a lose-lose proposition for the submarine:

              1. You fire and miss. X marks the spot.

              2. you fire and take out the asset. The mother ship or base, connected to and receiving data from the ASW asset you just killed, gets your location the moment their assets data-link goes dark -- stand by for a rocket propelled something-or-other up your butt.

Best course of action when the bad guys starts poking around: Hide With Pride.

              David,

You can get a good idea where a plane/helicopter is. If you see him through a periscope he's too darn close. Get out of there.
You can get a pretty good idea where he is and threat level through ECM if he is emitting electronically.
I agree with David-Don't hang around. They're faster and do what subs do best. Stay Stealthy. Don't give your position away.
