SS Seawolf special mod.
Does anyone know the function of this mode done in 1963 to the second nuclear powered submarine? Looking like a short flag pole run horizontally it is labeled as a Hall effect ELF sensor. Doing some research on it turned up nothing as far as submarines is concerned but researching ELF comes up with Extra low frequency. It says that the ELF is the frequency of a magnetic field produced by a local emitter and the Hall effect sensor picks up variations in that field by some other object. I am going to go out on a limb and say that variations in that field would be caused by a passing ship or..............a submarine. Perhaps it was too short ranged to be considered worth it. Perhaps its the same sort of thing as the funny looking antennas that we see sticking out of the hull of an Akula just in front of the sail. Conjecture of course, only the "Shadow" knows for sure. Any comment?

Would have looked great if they mounted it on the Nautilus.Make it simple, make strong, make it work! -
