    Boat performance

Dave of all the boats you have built and driven, could you list them and give a brief description of performance i.e. turning radius, stability, etc sort of a buyers guide for choosing a boat.
Have you ever sailed a Typhoon with the more correct stern than the one offered by ... his name escapes me . it had a big beaver tail and I think you made the props for it ( but then again , who did you not make props for except Kevin McLeod.

You're thinking of David Copeland. An exceptionally talented model-builder.

Yes, I operated his 'corrected' TYPHOON (with the more scale-like stern).

I'll list the characteristics like this, Rick: turning radius (in feet) -- stability -- depth keeping -- appeal -- unique features

1/280 SKIPJACK (Revell/Aurora) 1.5 -- fair -- good at low speed -- too damned small to see at any distance from shore -- pool toy
1/144 SEAWOLF (Trumpeter) 10, sucks! -- fair -- marginal -- easy to transport -- pool toy, requires rudder extension to be practical
1/144 KILO (Trumpeter) 5 -- good -- good -- a fun boat -- pool toy but runs well in open water too
    1/96 SKIPJACK (D&E) 4 -- good -- very good -- sexy! -- fast, and it's my go-too play toy!
1/96 STURGEON (Thor) 5 -- most stable boat I've ever driven! -- very good -- ugly -- good open water boat, hands-off once trimmed properly
1/96 AKULA (D&E) 15 -- fair -- good -- nice looking -- open water only, must have a rudder extension to be any fun at all
1/96 SEAWOLF (Thor) 10 -- fair -- fair -- interesting looking and big for this scale -- pump-jet and two sets of stern planes
1/96 THRESHER (Thor) 5 -- very good -- excellent -- almost as much fun to drive as the STURGEON, love the small sail versions of this class
    1/96 LOS ANGELES (Thor) 10 -- fair -- good -- boring looking -- ugh!
1/96 OHIO (Copeland) 8 (surprisingly tight for such a big boat) -- good -- very good -- meh -- missile deck makes broaching an issue if you're not careful
1/96 TYPHOON (Copeland) 15 -- good -- good -- very distinctive look on and below the surface -- everything!
    1/96 Type-212 (D&E) 3 -- very squirmy (still working on the X-tail mixing) -- poor -- X-tail
1/96 BLUEBACK (former Small World Models) 3 -- rock solid -- excellent -- nothing very distinctive -- very snappy performance, much fun to drive!
    1/96 SEAVIEW (Teskey ... you so-and-so, you!) 10 -- a hand-full underwater -- poor -- neatest looking sub of the bunch -- pump-jets, three rudders ... Hey! it's the frig'n SEAVIEW, OK?!
SEAVIEW (Moebius) 10 -- same as above, but smaller
SEAVIEW, Concept-2 (DeBoer) 15 -- sluggish underwater at best -- poor -- neat looking -- gimbaled pump-jet for pitch and yaw control (marginally effective)
    1/72 Type-7 (Revell) 5 -- skittish -- poor -- neat looking -- pool toy
1/72 GATO (Revell) 6 -- rock solid -- good -- beautiful looking on and under the water -- retractable bow planes
1/72 FOXTROT (Rick Pulumbo... who went MIA on us) 8 -- very good -- good -- very neat looking as it cuts through the water -- three propellers
1/72 ALFA (Thor) 15 -- good -- good -- neat looking -- good open water boat, needs a lower rudder extension to work right
1/72 SKIPJACK (Scale Shipyard) 6 -- good -- very good -- looks great on and under the water -- fast SOB!
1/72 SKIPJACK (Moebius) same as above
1/72 THRESHER (HK models) 8 -- good -- very good -- looks magnificent -- fast
1/60 ALBACORE (SubTech) phase-2 about 8, phase-3 onward about 5 -- excellent -- excellent -- nice tapered hull look -- great open water boat (original WTC sucks big-time!)
31" Disney NAUTILUS (Scott Brodeen) with gimbaled propeller it's about 6 -- very good with two-axis gimbaled propeller -- same -- what's to say ... it's the frig'n NAUTILUS!!!!
1/48 LOS ANGELES (DeBoer) 15 -- good -- good -- big boat, looks great on the surface -- a practical effects miniature for a Navy PSA
1/12 HUNLEY 15 -- marginal if kept below critical speed -- hardly -- neat looking civil-war submarine -- spar torpedo
1/12 ALLIGATOR (D&E) same as above
    1/16 KAIRYU 6 -- very good -- good -- unique look -- camera boat
24" FLYING-SUBMARINE (Teskey) 0 -- very good, but heels in tight yawing turn -- n/a -- nothing else looks like the FS! -- ahead and astern thrusters
HOLLAND No. 6 (Rocky Mountain) 6 -- good -- good -- crummy kit, semi-scale in my book -- converted to practical effects miniature, the 'bat-sub', fun to drive and a crowd pleaser

I truly wonder how those model specs reflect the handling of their full-sized counterparts???

It's a great "old" thread with lots of good photos and information.

Should belong in a Cabal Report.
