Got back very early Monday morning from Subregatta 2025. Drove up with Dave on Thursday night and got there around 6am. Met with everyone at 5pm for a long dinner, then got to the lake about 7am Saturday. The event was pretty well attended. People that were regulars said the lake was much more clearer than most previous events, but it was down about 20" give or take. Lots of buoys throughout the lake. All four of my subs broke, usually in-process, though my 1/96 Shark ran very well for an hour and a half. Because of the reflection and depth, I chose to run on the opposite side of the beach. The Akula developed pump issues, and I wound up having to drive it up to a submerged point and wade in to get it. The Nautilus busted a spur gear after 3 trials runs to the far side of the lake, I went to dive it and there was no propulsion. Wound up having to lasso it and drag it to a recoverable area. This was my first time running the FrSky radio (X18 with Tandem R10 rec.) Had an initial issue with transmission power, and cranked it up to 500, and still lost telemetry about a foot below the surface. Steve Mayou was helping me out and was also having problems. He cranked it up to 1 watt and was able to operate continuously at a few feet of depth out to about 50' or so. The lake is heavily chemically treated. There is absolutely nothing growing in the water except some algae. Weather was perfect. Frank P. bar-b-cue'd, and Joe and Ray organized everything superbly. Everyone was incredibly nice.

I had some gremlins around me as well. The reliable Skipjack, on the bench was fine, in the water was fine without the motor going. Once the motor was going in the water no left rudder, right rudder OK. That was Saturday. Sunday, everything seemed fine on the bench, once in the water, no rudder. Back on the bench the servo was locked. The XXIII, first time in the water, surfaced started working OK. Then no bow dive planes. Was OK before going in the water. Back on the bench, servo was locked. Marlin, all OK on the bench. In the water, ballast filled up by itself. Looked at it on the bench, all OK. Saturday evening as people were leaving, ran the Marlin, ran fine. Ran fine again on Sunday. Must be gremlins in the water.
Otherwise had a blast talking to everyone. David was even being nice. Had a great time at the Friday dinner. Thank you Ray and Joe for organizing this event. Please keep it going! And thanks Brian and Frank for the BBQ!

I had an amazing time making the trip out to Rotten Groton! The venue was fantastic, the weather couldn’t have been better, and after a little tinkering, I finally got my 212 to zip across the pond—leaving plenty of paint in the sand.
