Some video from last weekends Groton fun-run

Ray Mason and Joe Oliver once again organized a fun-run for local (and not so local) radio control submarine model enthusiasts. And, as before, the event was...

Although the water had a brown hue to it, it still looked clear. Your subs ran great. What a great time.
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

You're right, Rick: we need some of you squid-throwing, alabaster white, bacon munching, foreign tonged, beer guzzling Canuck's around; the only ingredient needed to make the event perfect.

Yes we did. Wonderful food, and the perfect end to a perfect event. Be there next year, you so-and-so!

Indeed it was, Tom. I know it's a long haul for you, but now that Ray and Joe have worked the event into a two-day deal I hope you give it some serious consideration. Water clarity was only an issue for those trying to get u/w shots. Otherwise, no problem making out the submerged model, even at the other end of the 'lake'.

            David,
I will give it serious thought and see, if not next year, maybe the year after.
Someday we will meet face to face.
            Peace,
            Tom

I know the Canadians would love to invade the base but I don't think they'll allow us foreign National Types on with out an armed escort haven't been in the area since Rhode Island reggatta

Maybe we could get Joe to petition the base commander on our behalf if it's even possible I don't know

                    Rick,

I brought this question up to them (Joe/Ray) last year after we talked about it and as far as I know there is no issue. In fact I believe we already had Foreign Nat's attend.

I will ask Joe this very moment to insure it wasn't a "Senior moment" conversation I had with them.

I would dearly love to see you and Sue there.

Paul's is now the official 1500 on Sunday (3PM for you Nub's) end of weekend "Victory Dinner" before we scatter

                        Rick,

                        You can come.

Here is the scoop directly from Joe Oliver and what's needed to get you and most other Foreign National's on base now.

                        Mr. Oliver,

I will need the information listed below for each foreign national
visitor along with the dates they will be on base and a point of contact
that will be here on base.

                        Passport info:
                        Country:
                        #:
                        Surname:
                        Given Name:
                        Nationality:
                        DOB:
                        Date of issue:
                        Date of Exp:

                        V/R,
                        YNSC(SS) Michael Aguirre
SUBASE New London Assistant Security Manager/

Additionally, someone in front in another car will have to escort them on
Base (that would be Joe Oliver and is HAPPY to do so). We'll ALL be there to help.

                        How it works............

Late this year, early next year, when the invites go out next year, I'll PERSONALLY see Ray adds you to the invite list with this information attached as a reminder.
At that point you send this information directly to Ray, this is done to keep the information private. He may even ask to call to keep it secure. (SSN's etc). Ray then correlates all the "I'm coming!!" responses with that requested information into a single list handed to Joe Oliver. This is then reviewed by the Sub Base staff at the "cut-off date" for potential miscreants. At that point they generate a "Base Access List" for that specific event.

Ray sends several reminders afterwards up to the "cut-off" date" to insure he gets everyone (but you still get excuses like "I never got it")

The list is finalized at the cutoff date, and Ray sends out a GO (who's responded and is on the access list), and NOGO (who never responded and did not make the access list) email to everyone to insure those who think they're on the list, but are NOT, don't show up expecting to get on. Yes it's happened.

The information is NOT kept by Ray or Joe and is requested YEARLY for the event. This is for both the visitors and the Base security. So don't get feathers ruffled when you get the same request year after year. That's one reason why some show up expecting to get on when they weren't on this years access list "Well you had my info from last year....". Sorry pal, either you don't take the time to read your email, can't read your email, or can't follow simple direction, and how's that OUR problem cause you drove 15 hours for nothing???

Sorry for the long explanation, but I wanted you to know EVERYTHING before you plan a long ride. Next years day is still TBD.

Thanks for taking this bull by the horns, Ed. Would be great to see the Canadian mob at the lake next year. And a big thank-you to Ray and Joe who ram-rod this thing each year -- a fun event!

FWIW, I just got the following from Joe, he wants more of our "Northern Neighbors" to come swim with us as well, feel welcomed, and not be put off by misinformation regarding "Base Access".

Wasn't there a speed controller vendor in Canada? Is Bill Huxhold still alive? Seems there were four or five Canadians not including Doug Badgely that used to come to the SubRegatta.

                            So pass the word Sailors!
