It's because they didn't have CGI that that film works so well, and the nautilus looks real. The film did make extensive use of mattes, and even some animation (the fish in the underwtare scenes were drawn in), and cgi is really just sophisticated animation.
Harper Goff clearly took a lot of care with his designs, and it paid off. You only have to look at subsequent attempts at the nautilus to see what happens when you get designers who don't know their onions.
Mason was always great at playing tortured souls, so this role was a gift for him.Leave a comment:

packed the baby and toddler off to bed, opened a bottle of wine, cooked some pasta, and sat back with my beautiful wife.
Wow - what a film, just finished watching it a few minutes ago.
James Mason plays the perfect Nemo.
I totally get the Nautilus now.
Amazing film for its time considering zero CGI and great underwater footage.
I get it.
Another sub I am going to have get I am sure.

You've never seen 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea?!
Get off your butt and run, DON'T WALK to the local video store. Its a classic movie that was done extremely well, was very well cast, and had an amazing storyline.
You'll fall in love with the Nautilus!Leave a comment:

Disney Nautilus in 1/69th scale!
Finished!
The soft, white resin that Lee uses drives me crazy, and made this a very challenging build. The fitment is not remotely what I was hoping for, but for an R/C model, which will typically be viewed from 10+ feet away, it is just fine! Of course, having to work with a very badly started static build didn't help matters either...
The guts are the 2" Seawolf SubDriver, which is of a perfect size for this model. A slightly bigger ballast tank would be nice, but as this is a drop-in fit, convenience wins over performance.
As the model is quite heavy, there is not a lot of freeboard in full surfaced trim, but definitely enough to make it look good. I am particularly impressed with the gimbaled prop assembly (ala Mr. Merriman). Pitch control is very good.
Rudder response is actually far better than I'd anticipated through the use of a clear plastic insert. For anyone with a Nautilus model, I highly recommend this modification, which should take mere minutes to perform and results in an enormous improvement in steering response. I would estimate that it brought this particular model from a 12' turning diameter to a 5' turning diameter!
Enjoy the video and photos!
This is a video of my conversion of a static display model of the Disney Nautilus from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea to R/C operation. The unit has a fully f...
