    Japanese I-400 submarine

Yea I have slow down on my I-400 build since I got my I-19. But I do plan on getting it done. I printed most of the hull, just need the stern and 1 lower hull part and then the Conning tower. But I just got the deck all the back to way to were the stern with the rest of the deck connects done.

          Hi David,

Your I-400 is really going to be a nice boat!

I just got my approximate 1:96 scale I-400 put together and, in the primer stage! I got my 3D print files for this boat off of Thingiverse, and modified the files to a certain degree. I have done a little pre-color scheme testing, just not sure which way to go yet.

I have found color photos of the original boat, and the rustic look seems like a good take.
I am really looking forward to seeing your progress on your boat. In looking at your photos, yours seems to be larger than 1:96 scale!? None-the less, keep up the great work, and keep them photos coming!

Yea the sub is 1/72 scale. You did a nice print yourself Rob. I am also redoing the model you printed. I will try to make the hull smoother and add all the flood vents at the size show in the picture. I already have the plane for it at the correct size.

I think I have the kit that you are showing for the airplane. I ordered it, but it was just to big for my boat. I went back on Thingiverse and found one similar, but not the exact plane. You are really going to have a nice boat when completed!

Are you going to go RC with your boat, or just a static model?

The first print sub of this version will be a prototype. If its good enough I will make its a RC sub. . I am sure I will learn from my mistakes in its design so I can update my design . See I printed the one you printed with a few changes in its design and It came ok. But then I decided to try to make a version for myself. What a pain in the ass it was to do.. Here is a picture of the one from thingiverse I printed with mods to the design back in 2019.

                  Dave,

That hull really looks great! I certainly see the differences in our two hulls. I wish I had the skills that you have to be able to go in and make changes to the print files. Your hull looks as if it could support a WTC!
You are doing a nice job on your build! I am looking forward to seeing your final design and build!

This is the inside of my current I-400. It can hold a 100mm wide cylinder if needed

Here is the hull laid out with the bow and stern. I just finished the stern. Now for the conning tower. But first i need to retune and upgrade my hotend on my printer as the prints are not as good as they were at the start.

Looking good David. I just replaced all of the rollers on my CR5+ and it improved the print quality.

Jezz I totally forgot I bought new rollersa few months ago. I just got to find them now. there somewhere in the house. Thanks for reminding me Steve.

As for the overall quality of the printed hull, I may reprint some parts, maybe. But I sure some filler and sanding should be able to smooth out the printing errors. The odd thing most of the printing errors happen in the lower hull parts. but the top of the sub came out good.

I always use PLA at 100% infill for all my builds!
