  • 1/72 Talent and 1/72 Conqueror

I'm back at the hobby - my Phd (DBA) is passed and I can get back into having weekends etc. 5 years of "trying" to find and not finding hobby time sucks, but hey I'm glad got the opportunity (read scholarship and tuition) to get a great grad school education. Here in this thread is some work that my son James now 11 and I are working on - 2 OTW subs Trafalgar class (being built as HMS Talent) and OTWs other 1/72 kit of the Valiant. Both are somewhat advanced in the build as we moved house / interstate for a new job I commenced after I handed in my thesis and we did and advance as much as possible on these but not record it.

Talent is being built by James and I have to say the only thing I have touched so far on the boat is the adding the really beautiful pump jet. My son's boat has lots of dings / scraps / drill cracks etc, and he's rapidly cleaning these up. He started building this on his own at aged 7 under my limited time supervision. I'm proud of what he has done so far.

Conqueror (Conks) has 2 R&R engineering gas torpedoes installed - these shoot tubes 1 and 3. Churchill and Valiant has 3 tubes across the bow. I am utilizing the R&R torpedoes - these are not 1/72 scale, and the best I can make out is that their around 1/48 scale in length and around 1/60 scale in diameter. As the external doors (square / oblong) on Conks is larger than the inner doors of the tubes I can fire the over-sized fish through the 1/72 scale outer openings.

I have had David's fine 1/72 torpedoes previously. They worked flawlessly. However, I'm going with bigger over-sized fish in this model as I can simply see them better in the water!

Photos below - James starting off and finishing the basic boat building (appendages etc).

    Some Conks photos

On the bench in the new workshop in a new state!!
Doing some planning on how to make the cut for the demarcation between pressure hull and upper casing.

This whole structure has triple duty.
The mechanical fire control - uses a simple servo push via magnetic mechanical safety (yes there are 2 other electronic safetys built into the radio)
The structure aft captures the valves that hold the torpedo in place and are released at the back of the tube. The upper structure holds the top hull half master stainless screw.

More Conks - the torpedo system

      Video test firing:
Here is a test video on the bench of firing Tubes 1 and 3 (Conks had 6 across her bow).

The casing cut was made with a Dremel along a pre-drawn line. A flat file expanded this joint. Finally a fresh layer of throughly wetted out fibreglass was applied inside the hull to span the join and strength the weak point caused by the cut.

          Some real boat photos

On this day in 1982, during Op Corporate, 5 minutes after this photo was taken, ANTRIM's helo (from which this photo was taken) rescued a sailor and the SBS operator shown standing on CONQUEROR's casing, when they were both swept into the ice-cold sea, without survival suits.

I am not seeing all the photos for some reason, but excellent work by your son. He has some skill there!
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

                I'll re-take some photos and re-post them - weird.

In the meantime can anyone please inform me as to what the hump and small domes structure is on HMS Talent's deck aft about midway between sail and the rudder in this photo?
