You know what? I changed my mind. I can do that.....right? Why all the fuss. I have the factory gearing of 3:1 already, lying in my junk box. Instead of searching and modifying, why dont I just use the 3:1 gearing? Try it out on the 2 bladed empellors. If I need more ummph, Ill just change out the 2 bladed empellors for 4 bladed ones Dave sent me? All right, you convinced me. Its a plan.Leave a comment:

Now on to gear reduction. The older style 3&1/2" Subdrivers came with outside mounted gear reduction units. I think that they are great because you can get right to them, and that allows you some flexibility as you will see. At any rate, they come set up for 3 to 1 gear ratio. Since we started out this mod with going direct drive, I think I will start from there and move up the ladder so to speak. From 1:1 we will go to 2:1 and note the improvement. The gear housings are mounted using screws that also hold the motor in......perfect.
Problem, you have to hunt for your own gears and also the center to center of the gear housing is fixed, so be prepared for some mods to the housing to make it work. Ill settle on a couple of gear sets shortly and Ill post a link to them.Leave a comment:

Needed to do a little work on the old style vent valve. I cant speak for the new style. Ill do what I did on the Oscar and it worked great. I drilled out the factory hole that was 5/32" and increased it to 3/16". In order to do that I had to remove the flapper valve. To re install it ,note that there is a chamfer on the front side of the housing and a built in chamfer on the flapper. Carefully make sure that whatever adhesive that you use holds those two areas together so that there will be tension pulling the flapper open when you hold it up. I used gap filling CA so that I could control where the CA went and could then "Freeze" it where I wanted. Just a little dab will do ya.Leave a comment:

Get a sheet of cheap plywood, and cut it into three long lengths. Make an 8' long x 1' 4" box and line it with some pond liner sheet. It will cost less, and take up much less room.

Got it in the water today. Yep, well definitely have to go with gear reduction. The 20 amp speed controls keep cutting out at anything above half throttle. That tells me that those motors will burn up. So, im looking into a 2 to 1 gear ratio, to start with. Details later. Also, Im going to follow Daves lead once again. Im going to buy me a kiddie pool. That way I can trim my two large subs at the house without a long drive.Leave a comment:
