The SAAB 37 Viggen detailed development history.

Released yesterday, it goes into Sweden's determined brilliant innovative engineering, radical concept of the SAAB System 37. It goes into the software in great detail and if not a submarine, the innovations and 'design uncertainty' is fascinating and an inspiration to us Sub builders too. Its always been one of my favorite aircraft. at the time of the aircrafts navigation system, it matched or surpassed NASA's MIT's developing the small computer to land the Lunar module. The software now in comparison to today is a door stop, and our pocket calculators are more powerful, but in 1969 it was the best in the world. The Saab 37 was and now the blackbird is retired IS the only interceptor to get radar locks on the SR-71.

The SR-71 regularly flew so high and fast as they skirted the Soviet border looking from the outside into Severomorsk, Murmansk Oblast and the Kola inlet amoung other places. The Swedish a Airforce regularly had friendly competition practicing intercepts as it flew over Sweden on the way back to the UK. When one SR-71 sortie had a rare engine flame out and had to limp back to the UK subsonic, a flight of Vigens scrambled & rode shot gun and shepherded her over the Baltic away from Soviet interceptors thinking now was their chance. Thank you, Sweden.
